Show Cowboys Seek Eighth Straight Against BYU By JOE WATTS Herald Sports Editor There isn’t a WACtitle at stake Saturday when the BYU Cougars host the Wyoming Cowboys at 1:30 p.m.in Cougar Stadium, but thereis plenty of incentive for a whale of a football game, and a huge crowdis expected to be on hand for the traditional contest. ‘Whatincentive does Wyoming have? They are 1-50n the season and 1-3 in WACplay, and there doesn’t seem to be muchto gain against the Cougars. However, Wyoming’s coach Lloyd Eaton doesn’t see it that way. He has a winning streak against the Cougars that he wants to preserve, namely seven straight triumphs. He wants to makeit eight. Whatincentive does BYU have? The fact that they've lost seven straight to the Pokes should provoke somedesire for a victory, and the fact that BYU coach Tommy Hudspeth has never beaten the Cowboys should give additional motivation. Last year the Cougars wereblitzed 40-7 in an emotion gamed game that saw the Cowboysplaying without14 black players, who had been booted off the team by Coach Eaton for wearing black arm bands in violation of his ruling. This year the game is rated asa tossup, but if there has to be a favorite it would be BYU by a slim margin. The comparative scores show the Cougars have fared better against common foes. The Cowboys lost to Arizona State by 49 while the Cougars only lost by 24, and against the Utah State Aggies the Pokes lost by 13 points while BYU wen by seven, ; With four games still to be played, Chris Farasopoules is closing in on several WAC and NCAA career records. He needs only 47 more yards to tie the NCAA career record of 2,053 combined yards set by Dicky Lyons of Kentucky, 1966-68. Chris wil! need 198 more vards in kickoff returns to tie the NCAA recordof 1,473 yards set by Steve Bramwell of Washington, 1963-65. Chris alreadyholds the NCAA record for most combined yardage in one season which he setlast year. While mentioning records, it should be pointed out that Dai: Hansen, Cougar safety, isin a good positionto tie the schoolrecord for interceptions in one season, The BYU record is nine, set by Gene Frantz back in 1962. Hansen picked uphis sixth pass interception Saturday against USU. Team captain Chris Farasopoulos and a dozenother seniors will be playing before the homecrowd forthe last time Saturday. The group includes Don Griffin (QB), Bill Glatch (DHB), Neil Bingham (WB), Eddie Nichols (GB), Dick Legas (DHB), Ken Serck (OT), Jim Phillips (OG), Jim Faulkner (DE), Gerald Meyer (DT), Mike Jacobsen (DT), Larry Heaps (SE), and Lucky Dare Fleming (SE). Watts | Cookin By JOE WATTS aa Kansas State, Tulsa Placed on Probation Season Was Exciting In myfour years of watching and reporting Orem has now been crowned champion, there are three other teams morethanwilling, ready, and anxious to challenge them for the top spot. If it were like boxing and the champicn had to defendits title against all comers, it wouldn’t be long and some team in the league would dethrone the Tigers. The four top teamsin the league, all of about equal strength, were Orem, Spanish Fork, American Fork, and Payson. American Fork defeated both Orem and SpanishFork, butlost to Payson. Payson got beat by Orem by a long touchdownpass in the waning minutes, and by Spanish Fork on field goal. Orem and Spanish Fork tied each other once and Orem won the deciding gameon a field goal with two minutes remaining. If they were all to play each other again the standings might readily be jumbled in another manner. As it stands, American Fork is on the sidelines wishing well to Orem and Spanish Forkin carrying the Region Four celorsinto state tournament competition. While the league was well-balanced this year, it will now be interesting to see how the best in Region Four stack up againstthe best in the other leaguesin the state. Most Improved Team Springville, coached by Mike Jacobsen, must rate as the most improved team in the league during the season, and maybe should beincluded in the sameclass with the top four teams in the league.Certainly their improvement has been so remarkable that it would be interesting to see wherethey wouldfinish if the season were to be played over. Jacobsen’s charges lost their first three games, but came on strong to wintheir last six contests. The first three were against such strong foes as Payson, Orem, and Spanish Fork —hardly an easystart on the season for a young group of gridders. The Red Devils didn’t let the losses ruin the season. They camefighting back with such a fury as to make everyone sit up and take notice — and they can take the credit for knocking American Fork out of thetitle picture with a 10-7 triumph. Springville won its last four games by shutouts, a remarkable record after having allowed 93 points in the first four games of the season. Springville’s string of four straight shutouts equalled the mark of four straight shutouts by American Fork at the start of the year. The Cavemen finished the season with six shutouts, the mostin the league, and probably in thestaie. TheCrittendens, Jim and Tom, the coaches at Lehi and American Fork, will vividly remember one Red Devil who wasparticularly a nemesis to their teams. He is Kim Dewsnup, who kicked a field goal to give Springville a 10-7 win over American Fork, and another field goal to give Springville a 3-0 win over Lehi. Dewsnupis back next year for Springville and it will be interesting to see the rematch between those schools.
