Show Second Section mR Ipvn March 4, 1982 Page Ray Beckham enters Congressional race Speaking before 150 business executives. community leaders and friends, Ray Beckham, of Provo, announced his candidacy for Utahs new Third District seat at a Congressional Wednesday morning breakfast at the Marriott Hotel in Salt Lake City. At noon, he met with another group of supporters and community leaders in Provo at the City Council Chambers in the Provo City Hall before embarking on a five-da- y tour of the district where hell stop in 29 towns. After being introduced in Salt Lake City by Richard Wirthlin, special assistant to President Ronald Reagan, who interrupted a business trip to be at the campaign announcement, Beckham said that as a member of the House of Representatives he would try to help restore its original function. 1 think the House of Representatives should go back to its base of being the constitutional watchdog of government spending. I think thats the reason were in the trouble we're in today. he commented. Concerning the economic plight of the country, Beckham said, It doesnt take a genius to know that after 50 years of deficit spending we have an enormous, raising efforts for BYU's football stadium and Marriott Center and a regional representative and mission rudderless government and bureaucracy. Our runaway inflation is the highest in history. Our taxes are the highest in history. Our interest rates are the highest in history and our foreign is one of weakness policy and capitulation." We must reduce taxes. We must reduce spending. We must reduce our welfare costs. We must reduce inflation. We must reduce interest rates. We must reduce government. We need a strong national defense. History has proven that peace comes front strength not from weakness," he said.
