Show Sports Messangar-Entarprlsa- Last weekend, the Snow Badgers opened up their tennis season in grand style by heading south to Arizona and California, where blue d skies and courts led to some exciting tennis competition. Last Thursday, the Badgers went up against Arizona Western ranked H2 in the powerful Arizona conference. Barry Pierson played extremely well in 3 singles, but and This narrowly lost by was the day's closest match, leaving the Badgers with a loss to Western. But the Snow Badgers didn't sun-bake- 7-- 6 6-- 9-- 0 victory in til singles. And, in singles, Alfonso Cardenas took a 6-- 4 7-- 6 win. About the only bleak spots in this contest for the Badgers were the losses Madsen and Jorgensen took in 4 and 5 singles. 6-- 2 6-- 1 6-- 6-- 4 6-- Manti High School's 12 candidates will compete with the candidates from 1 other schools for cash prizes and sterling silver pins at the Centerfield Ward Chapel Monday in the Central Utah Sterling Scholar Program. The winners in Monday's judging will be announced at an awards assembly on April 5 at 7 p.nt. at the North Sevier High School in Salina. The winner in each of the 12 categories will receive $200, the two runners-ueach $100. They'll also receive sterling silver pins. In addition, most will receive the offers of college scholarships. The candidates in each category will be interviewed Monday by committees of three judges, with one judge from the State Office of Education, one from a state college and one from a university. The committees will also evaluate the candidates portfolios, school records and recommendations.
