Needs volunteers To the Editor: Mayfield Manor needs volunteers who would enjoy helping with activities for our patients. We would appreciate those who can come and spend time visiting and reminiscing with those who have no families in the area. If you can play the piano or other musical instrument, our residents love music. If you would like to help with arts and crafts, we have several who enjoy handicrafts. We also need families who would share their Family Home Evening program with our patients. Please contact our activity director Carma Sorensen, 0 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and discuss with her how you can help make our patients lives 528-355- more enjoyable. Admittedly, it's hard to get nostalgic about it, but do we even remember? And if we remember, has it caused us to make changes in our lifestyles? Do you embargo? According a survey conducted by Drs. LaRae Chatelain and Craig Peterson at USU in 1981 and 1983, we are more conscious of at least a few basic energy saving concepts. For 'instance, more than 70 percent of Utah respondents said they would be much more likely to buy a house that had solar heating. An equally large percentage of those surveyed said they would be much less likely to purchase an electrically heated house. So, it would seem the cost of heating is foremost on Utahns minds. Concerning heating with wood, 64 percent of the respondents said they would be much more likely to buy a house which included a wood stove. Out attitudes toward energy have changed somewhat between 1981 and 1983. We are more concerned Please Drive Safely and Courteously And Please Use Seat Belts and Car Seats! about the cost of energy and less concerned about its supply. When researchers compared survey participants responses when asked to consider how higher energy costs influenced their lives in the last five years, "made it a lot worse than it was" was the most common response. More rural and urban Utahns responded this way in 1983 than those answering the same question in 1981. In contrast, respondents inl983 were less concerned about the U.S. being able to meet future energy needs. Only about 25 percent considered future energy needs a serious as "very problem d in 1981. compared to over 3 Trivia 5.9. Sanpete Countys jobless rate has edged up another notch -- - to 14.5 of the work force in December, up from 13.3 in November. And Bruce Barton, manager of the countys Job Service office, thinks the rate will go up still more, to as much as 15.5 or even 16 in January. What has contributed to the increase? The completion of this years turkey harvest at the Moroni in Plant. Processing Layoffs construction. The close-dow- n of the Valley Camp Coal Mine. That closedown has idled about 20 miners who live in Sanpee County. Mr. Barton commented that 954 people are now on Sanpete Countys unemployment rolls. And 365 of them are drawing unemployment checks. He thinks the number getting those checks could go up to maybe 400 by February. or Utah the administrator of Employment Department Security estimates that rate will edge in 1986. That would down to 5.7 be a little below the national average. Mr. Gardner predicts that the state will generate 5,000 new jobs in 1986, but that new job growth will not be evenly distributed among the various industrial sectors. Mining, he said, will continue in distress. Employment in agriculture will continue about the present level. Construction will improve overall, but diminish in Millard county because of the completion of the IPP power plant. Mining, agriculture, construction, these industries are directly affecting employment in Sanpete County. Mr. Barton expects to see some improvement in Sanpete by April, but that improvement is likely to be mainly seasonal. be Friday Forum speaker Norman H. There is evidence to support that conclusion in precipitation data accumulated at the Ephraim and Manti weather stations. Gary Jorgenson, who gathers weather data for the Forest Service at the Sorenson Field station, says 1985 was the third wettest year of all the years that records have been maintained at Sorenson Field. And 1985 followed several other unusually wet years at this site. He said that the 5.72 inches he has measured for October, November and December are 201 percent of h average for the period. Those three months, of course, are not only the last quarter of calendar year 1985, but the first three months of the 1986 water year. three-mont- They indicate, he pointed out, that from a precipitation standpoint, IS Chatelain, the features often most savings mentioned by survey respondents are not usually the most' cost According to effective. The program is aimed at improving the reproductive level of herds through the use of improved management techniques. About 15 demonstration ranchers have cooperated in trying different levels of management. This is part of a national Integrated Reproductive The program. Management program is sponsored by Utah Cattlemens Association and Utah State University Extension Service. Utah. Management is greatly aided by keeping good records. For this purpose, the Extension Livestock Specialists at USU have developed a pocket record book for cattlemen. It has space to record the following: individual calving record, calving by period, marking dates and vaccinations given, weaning dates and vaccinations given, pregnancy exam results, calf sales record, bull management record, culling information, as well as a complete yearly calendar.
