Under the dwelling retention (homestead) program, a farm home acquired by FmHA through voluntary conveyance, foreclosure or bankruptcy proceedings can be leased back, under certain conditions, to the former owner with an option to purchase. A former FmHA borrower can apply to FmHA to lease the farm home and "a reasonable amount of land, usually about five acres, for up to five years with an option to purchase when he or she is financially able. The former owner must have sufficient income to make rental payments and to maintain the property in good condition.
