Winder put the company on probation for five years or until it pays the $871,000 judgment. Last December federal agents raided the Salina processing plant operated by Norpro, a joint ownership subsidiary of Norbest in partnership with the Utah Turkey Growers Association. The agents confiscated materials from the plant and sent part of their evidence for extensive lab analysis which ultimately resulted in three employees being convicted on charges that they adulterated turkey products destined for school lunch programs and embezzled turkey meat. The three were also accused of substituting filler" materials and spoiled David meat in the processed turkey products, as well as adding unacceptable levels of water to make up the weight needed. U.S Attorney Brent Ward said last Thursday that still more charges are expected to be filed in the case, including some against the plant manager. The guilty pleas entered last Thursday were made by Norbest attorney Randon Wilson and the company president, Owen W. Sumsion. The two count felony information was filed only late last Wednesday and the pair appeared Furniture & Harpine has since been convicted on several counts, and is presently sentence in a serving a federal prison. Ward said the actual value of the meat stolen by employees at the Salina plant had been established at about $70,000. Norpro's restitution also includes the amount of its contract with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Included in the company's fine is the $160,000 cost of investigating the activities at the plant. The day after the December raid in 198S, the Salina plant closed . In June this year, the plant reopened, reactivating the whole-birprocessing portion of the plant, which had never been involved in the investigation. At unit is present the whole-biroperating with about 65 persons employed. Previously, the plant employed about 250 persons at peak. d d Hardware FREE PREGNANCY For all your furniture, carpet, hardware, and appliance needs. 41 S. BY THOMAS REEVE Dandelions show up most in spring with their profuse yellow blossoms and fluffy light seedheads. Actually, Ward said many of the employees at the Salina plant were minimum wage earners who had no contact with anyone up the corporate ladded any further than processing supervisor Jack 0. Harpine, whom Ward alleges ordered about 10 of them to steal the turkey products or participate in adulterating them, or lose their jobs. "Corporate officers were never on the floor at the Salina plant. Ward noted. "The employees felt used . . . but didnt know where to turn." An added attraction this year will be a celebrity Santa who will receive the gift requests from children as they sit on his lap or have pictures taken with the child if that is desired. The Festival of Trees is scheduled from Wed. Dec. 3 through Sat. Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. The trees will be on display at the Expo Center in the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City. 2,4-formulated for lawns. However, care must be taken to avoid spraying when there is any wind or the temperature is above 90 degrees or else it can volatilize and do damage to nearby ornamental plants. Dandelions can be killed by digging and cutting off the roots. They must be cut off 4 to 5 inches below the oil survace to get all the bulbs; otherwise the dandelions will come back strong fed by the large, long tap root. form of however, Utah State University recommends September as a good time to control them. Herbicides such as 2,4-- are very effective on dandelions at this time of year. Killing them in the fall allows time for the large bare spots vacated by the dead dandelions to fill in with grass in late fall and early spring so the lawn will look nice next year. Dont expect to see the dandelions die immediately after spraying this time of year. The process is slow, requiring 2 to 3 weeks. Since there are many different brands and concentrations of 2,4-D- , no general recommendation of the amount to spray can be given, but be sure to follow the directions on the label. Information on calibrating sprayers and other valuable information is contained in two extension Home Lawns for publications, Utah" and "Weed Control For The Homeowner. Both may be ordered through the local county extension The homeowner is advised to use good lawn management as an important part of weed control. This means fertilization with nitrogen to encourage grass growth, mowing 1 Vi to 2 inches high to maintain grass strength, watering deep and less often to encourage deep rooting of the grass and to allow the surface to dry to prevent weed seedlings from getting established. office.
