All seven Manti High School entrants qualified for the upcoming state tournament. David Lindsay, Tyler Nehrenz, Kris Jorgensen, Mark Nielsen, Travis Thompson, Darren Dyreng and David Dyreng all placed high enough to make the trek to Provo, Saturday, May 11. Play will start at 9 a.m. and court assignments made at the BYU courts at 8:30 a.m. Grantsville and Park City finished one and two with 23 and 21 points respectively at region. His third place medal came after a classic 6 match with Hopkins. Tyler Nehrenz won from Ryan Clellen of Morgan before losing to Colby Burr of 1-- 6; 7-- Grantsville. He gained his qualifying spot over Steve Mitchell of South Summit. In third singles, Kris Jorgensen defeated Sammy Kaye of Gunnison, Lost to Jessie Davis of Park City and gained third with a victory from North Sanpetes Brandon Olson. The No. 1 doubles duo of Mark Nielsen and Travis Thompson opened with a win over South Summits Ryan Crittendon and Brian Blayyard, then had a good win over Park City, represented by Matt Eastman and Pat Sprows. They placed second after losing in the finals to Chris Johnsen and Aaron Jefferies of Grantsville. With only one senior playing at region, the Templars showed promise with a third place finish. Although Gunnison failed to qualify players in their first competition of recent years, Eric Petersen and Sammy Kaye both won matches and a number of the Bulldogs return next season. Top Player of the tournament, Rudy Stankovic of Park City, gave all the other players a clinic on well grooved, smooth stroking. Brandy Shand pitched the Lady Templars to their sixth league win in seven starts in the defeat of Gunnison last week. Manti High Schools six game victory starting in the Region 9 baseball campaign ended in a strange way last week: The Templars dropped a 7 decision to the Gunnison Bulldogs - and 4-- -- all seven Bulldog runs were unearned the result of Manti errors. Steve Olsen held the Gunnison batters to two hits, the kind of performance that would win around 99 percent of baseball games. And the Templars, in turn, got to the Bulldog pitchers for 10 hits, enough hits to win almost any game. But to no avail. Ahead 1 into the bottom of the second inning, the Templars committed enough errors to let five Gunnison runners come home. And the Templars committed more errors - 10 in all - by - 2-- -- -- games end. The result was a first place finish in regular Region 9 play for Gunnison and a second place finish for Manti.
