The clinic was established nine years ago to evaluate new medications not yet available to the public. According to Frederick W. Reimherr, M.D., assistant professor of psychiatry and clinic director, the study will use medications to treat the symptoms of anxiety. There are different kinds of anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorders and general anxiety, and this particular study will focus on panic attacks, Dr. Reimherr said. Panic attacks interfere significantly with an individuals social and professional life. They can be accompanied by agoraphobia, a disorder marked by overwhelming anxiety about traveling away from home and fear of being in a large open space. People with agoraphobia will avoid situations where they fear the occurrence of a panic attack. For instance, a person who has a panic attack while driving may avoid doing so, believing that driving is what triggers the attack, Dr. Reimherr said. Researchers are seeking people who experience a minimum of one major panic attack a week and one mild panic attack in the same week. In order to qualify as major, the attack must include at least four of the following symptoms: shortness of breath, choking or smothering sensation, palpitations or accelerated heart rate, chest pain or discomfort, sweating, faintness, dizziness, lightheadedness or unsteady feelings, nausea or abdominal distress, feelings of unreality, tingling sensation, hot flashes or chills, trembling or shaking, fear of dying, fear of going crazy or nayiee JaCKSOn Its a first daughter for Wendy and Cory Jackman of Fairview and a sixth grandchild for Bob and Bonnie Sevy. scheduled between 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Medications and associated costs of the study are free.
