They delivered .93 inch of water. And .93 inches is exactly the August average for Manti over an period, as recorded the James M., Leslie J. and by Lee J. Anderson weather 83-ye- ar observation team over an period. The storms hit the bottom of Manti Canyon even harder than in town, sending water pouring out of the foothills to overflow the flood channel onto Main Street and along First and Second South. A mud slide on the canyon road stranded several campers at Yearns overnight. The culinary line was punctured at 83-ye- ar one site and the mud flow caused damage at several locations and plugged pressurized irrigation lines.. By contrast the same storms delivered only .45 inch of water at Sorenson Field, a mile southeast of Ephraim. Thats typical of August thunderstorms, theyre spotty," commented Gary Jorsenson, who gathers the weather data at Sorenson Field. The average for August at Sorenson Field is .90 inch. The early August storms however, gave promise of better days ahead after two months of a precipitation shortfall in both Ephraim and Manti. Mr. Jorgenson measured only .30 inch of water in June and .72 inch in July at Sorenson Field, below average for both months. July was an even drier month in Manti, where Mr. Anderson reported only .24 inch. The long-- , time average in Manti for July is .86. But then July, like August, is a spotty month precipitation wise in Manti. The wettest July in Manti was July 1914s 3.51 inches, the driest, only a trace each time, was July 1938 and July 1958. Mainly because of the June and July shortfalls, the water year at both Ephraim and Manti are still below average. In Manti, for example, as of July 31, Mr. Anderson had recorded 9.70 inches of precipitation, 89 percent of normal. 1991 Sanpete County fairbook salutes Desert Storm units In a gesture appropriate to its Stars, Stripes and Sanpete" theme, the Sanpete County fairbook this year salutes several individuals and units that served in the Persian Gulf War.
