As King Cowboy, hell saddle up for Saturday's parade down Main Street, and as the Bown family patriarch, he may throw his saddle across the hood of Junker No. 33, and join in the demolition derby parade on Thursday. S The Sanpete Cattlemens Association named Bruce Bown its 1991 King Cowboy not only because hes been a successful beef producer, dairyman, lamb and wool grower and horse fancier for years, but also because of his numerous contributions other ways. In 1981 he was made an honorary member of the Manti High School FFAand in 1990 he was made an honorary member of the Sanpete County fair board for his contributions to those organizations. He and his wife Myrle Dean got started square dancing in 1961. Bruce soon graduated to caller, and has been calling for the Sagebrush Swingers for 20 years. Hes also called for other groups in several states. Hes also a vocalist a singer with his own special cowboy touch. Hes often called to sing at special events, and sometimes serves as emcee, spicing up the occasion with his own brand of humor. Bruce may not ride Junker No. 33 in the parade this afternoon and he certainly wont be at its wheel when the demolition gets underway Myrle Dean will see to that but the Bowns three sons will be much involved. Brad will for the sixth year be the derby chairman. He says therell be four heats with 10 to 12 cars, from all over the state, in each heat. The drivers will - pay a $25 entry fee, and theyll compete for big bucks: first place will win $700; second place, $500; third place, $300; wipeout, $300; most aggressive $200, most unusual, $100 and so on. At the halfway point in the derby, the roars of the cars will be silenced while 15 kids try to ride 15 sheep to the finish in the contest Gary Madsen and Bruce Bown will loan the 15 woolies and 15 anxious couples will grant their muttin-busti- n offspring permission to compete. The vehicles entered in the derby meet a lot of requirements to protect the safety of the drivers, but Bown and Madsen wont guarantee that some kids dont get butted. The demolition derby has proved to be not only the fairs most popular event but also its This biggest money-makelooks years lineup very good," Brad says. r. |
