Former students will speak at 10:30 Sat. in AC Pomp and circumstance -the traditional caps and gowns, processionals and award ceremonies, will again mark Snow exercises Colleges this week. year-endin- g Dr. Lamar H. Stewart and his wife Nedra Denison Stewart will be the featured speakers at the 1992 Snow College Commencement program on Saturday, June 6. The program begins at 10:30 a.m. in the Snow College Activity Center. The doctor and his spouse both attended Snow College in the late 1940s, where they first met and fell in love. Since that time they have raised seven children who have all attended Snow College. Both the baccalaureate services Friday night at 6:30 and the commencement program Saturday morning at 10 will be held in the Activity Center and con- ducted by Pres. Gerald Day. Sculptor James T. Russell will deliver the baccalaureate sermon and Peggy B. Chappell, Lyman, will representthegradu-atinclass as salutatorian. g President Day will present outstanding student awards to Sarah Jane Larsen, Ephraim and Richard Elden Kearl, Sandy. The Snow College Chamber will Orchestra play MendelssohnsViolin Concerto." Dr. LaMar H. Stewart and his wife Nedra, Snow College graduates, will share in giving the commencement address and they will also, during the program, be awarded honorary degrees by President Day. Lamar started building a thriving family medical practice in Gunnison, Utah over 35 years ago. He served the medical community during that time as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Utah State Medical Association. The time demands of a small-towphysician can be a family, but on tough enough Dr. Stewart always saw fit to do more for his community. Before attendingSnow College he served his country for two years in Europe during World War II. n His selfless devotion to the scouting program always made him a favorite scoutmaster. He served the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America as an executive member at large and a member of the Advisory Board. He washonored with the Silver Beaver award in 1970. Lamar always cherished his invitation by the governor to be a member of the State Water Resources Board. He has also been the chairman of the Gunnison Valley Economic Dr. Development Committee. Stewarts vision, motivational abilities and his willingness to act as the first president ofSnows Foundation Board, helped move the board to significantly higher levels of fund development. Dr. Stewart has been president of the board for seven years. He grew up in Fairview, Utah. After attending North Sanpete High School he went south to Snow College. He graduated as valedictorian in 1948. While there he met the former Nedra Denison. The two were soon wed and both moved to Salt Lake City where they began Manti High School girls softball team with the state championship! Come-from-behin- Nedra spent four years running IBM business machines at Pacific International Insurance Company to help Lamar work his way through medical school at the University ofUtah. Nedra is a native of Sterling, Utah and attended Manti High School before she waschosenasSnowQueen while attending college in Ephraim. The couple has been extremely active in all aspects of the LDS church. Nedra has been a Relief Society president, a ward and stake Primary president, a stake Young Ladiescounselorand has taught in most auxiliaries. Lamar has been a bishop, a stake presidency counselor, a stake president for 10 years, during which time the Gunnison Stake Center was built. He was a regional representative for years. Later Dr. Stewart was called to preside over the Charlotte, North re 2) 13-1- al 2, 7-- championship round. Mrs. Stewart has been as active in the community as her husband. For years, she was the Chairman of the Sanpete County Heart Fund and spent hundreds of hours helping others. Only three members of the 1992 championship team;SueCox, Brandy Shand and Traci Miller are the graduating seniors. Service Above Self Award presented Robert Stoddard, Ephraim, was recently named by the Ephraim Rotary Club as the recipient of their prestigious Service Above Self Award. plaque was presented to him at a special luncheon held May 18 at the Senior Citizen Center. Rotarian Alvin Green read the citation and presented the award. A Bob Stoddard has served Snow College and the community for 38 years with a commitment unsurpassed, Green said. Duringthis timehe has faithfully worked in many capacities with enthusiasm and vigor. Bob has been known as coach to many young men who played football, basketball and wrestled under his careful, caring He has served as acting president of Snow College twice, dean of instruction, agriculture instructor, P.E. instructor, athletic director and prior to retirement, served as vice president for development. In 1989, Bob was presented an honorary degree from Snow College. He was instrumental in planning and building Badger Stadium and served as chairman of the Activity Center Building supervision. Development. During his presidency he was responsible for establishing the NCRD Washington D.C. office. Bob was included in the Rick s College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983. In the community Bob has served two terms as Ephraim City councilman. He has been an active member of the Ephraim Lions Club for 36 years. He recently served as president of the Ephraim Chamber of Commerce. Bob also serves on the Ephraim Square Board, where he was instrumental in obtaining funding for the restoration of the Ephraim Cooperative Mercantile. Bob is married to the former Dorothy Jensen of Ephraim who last year served as Utahs Mother of the Year. Together they have raised four children and 16 grandchildren. Bob has been active in his church and h'e and Dorothy were recently called to serve in the Manti Temple. Committee. He served as vice president and president for the National. Council for Resource Four arrested on narcotics charges Four majorcocaine suppliers in theSanpete area were arrested on June 1 for narcotics violations. The investigation and arrests were made by the Quad County Narcotics Task Force. un m r n n Dr. Lamar and Nedra Stewart i The Task Force was assisted in the investigation by the Utah County Narcotics Task Force. The investigation started in Gunnison City, Sanpete County, r and led to Utah County. The investigation ended with the arrests of Michelle Whitaker, 20 years old of Gunnison; Christ Anderson, 20 year old of American Fork; Scott Johnson, 21 years old of Salt Lake City; and a female juvenile ofSalt Lake City.
