When he six-da- 3 y and Tom Bishop were picked up Friday morning atMcCuen Flat, Jeff weighed only 57 pounds. But Jeff, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Lindsay, has been making up for lost calories. Hes raise for school employees The South Sanpete School District shook the money tree in behalf of its teachers and other employees at the conclusion of salary negotiations last week. The settlement means all employees will get three percent raises in thebasic salary schedule at an additional cost of $96,205 for services. The increase in the schedule means that a beginning teacher will start at $ 1 8,660. The previous figure was $18,117. Teachers with 25 years in the district, teachers who do not qualify for lane changes and increments, will get two percent increases, for a total cost of $12,341. The district also agreed to fully fund a five percent increase in health insurance costs at an additional cost of $52,334. Lane changes and increments will cost $85,595. In other matters the district was not so generous. The new queen will succeed Jill Petersen, Manti, the reigning Miss Sanpete. Contestants include: Brandie Blood, Gunnison; Carrie Penrod, Manti; Camie Lynn Church, Fairview;Jinny Lou Blair, Manti; Claudia E. Webb, Mt. Pleasant; Cadee Hansen, Ephraim. Nicole Buchanan, Gunnison; Kristie Lynne Shore, Ephraim; Jolene Kaye Bagnall, Manti; Andrea Miller, Mayfield; Carolyn Finlinson, Moroni; Kristy Lynn Casperson, Ephraim; Debbie Jo Coates, ML Pleasant and Karen Barton, Manti. Kristy Lynn Casperson appeared before the school board and requested both permission and support for the Manti High School cheerleading team to attend the National Cheerleading Finals in Dallas, Texas on December 26th. They pointed out that no school time would be lost. However, thecostof participation in the finals is $16,000. The Manti cheerleading delegation noted that their team was the only squad chosen to representUtah from the National Cheerleading Association Camp at the University of Utah held in late July. The school board gave permission for the Manti team to attend, and offered moral support, but said it could not give any financial support. The board also approved the employment of five new teachers: Pam Larsen, first grade; Shelly Oliver, kindergarten; Karen Hansen, special education, all at Gunnison Valley Elementary School, and George Peterson, at Manti High media specialist, School. been eating around the clock, his mother says. Adult leaders Steve Tate, the Scoutmaster, and Eldon Bishop, a member of the First Ward Bishopric, their vehicle loaded with food, sleeping bags and other paraphernalia, delivered the scouts at the drop-of- f point, and met them at the overnight destination on schedule. But something still went wrong. At Duck Fork, the ten scouts were divided into two teams. The first team took off along the road for Co ve Lake and made it on time. The second team of five; Jeff, Tom, Eli Powell, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Randy Powell ; Jared Smith, a son ofMr. and Mrs. Stan Smith, and Andrew Tate, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Tate, followed along the same trail about ten minutes later. But the second team didnt arrive at the Cove, and the alarm was sounded ... Five boys missing Manti Mountain! All five were still missing Thursday morning, but by evening, Eli, Jared and Andrew had been found. They had remembered the warning in the Scout manual: If lost, plant yourself on a high point. We decided we had mistaken our surroundings and taken the wrong trail, says Jeff. That resulted in their becoming separated from the other scouts. Jeff and Tom stayed together for the second night in the on McCune Flat area. They were turns going out for water after the supply in their canteens ran out. cold, hungry and took Were they worried? Robert Braithwaite, of first Rescue Search and Sanpete spotted them on McCuen Flat, standing and waving, and Deputy Sheriff Rick Howe picked them up. The pickup averted a more massive search, with horses and dogs, that was then being mounted. As it was, the rescue two involved helicopters, three planes, four dog teams and perhaps a hundred volunteers from five counties. operation It was an expensive operation in time, money and emotional wear and tear on a great many anxious people. But it was worth it, one volunteer said, not only because the lost boys were found and returned to their homes, but also because itisa demonstration of the good will for others that most of us feel. Classic Car Show One of the special events this year, and a sure crowd pleaser, is the Classic Car Show on Sat., Aug. 29. on the lawn south and east of the Fair Grounds. This is the third annual show and is the only such show in the state that weekend, which should ensure numerous entries. Nicole Buchanan is a 1992 graduate of Gunnison Valley High School. She will perform a violin solo entitled, concerto in A Minor by Vivaldi. She is the daughter of Steven and Suzanne Buchanan. Kristy Lynne Shore, daughter of Tom and Norma Shore, is a 1992 graduate of Manti High Cadee Hansen Karen Barton School. She will perform a piano solo entitled, Rhapsody by Mar- garet Wigham. A 1991 graduate of Manti High School, Jolene Kaye Bagnall will perform a character pointe to Yankee Doodle. She is the daughter of Louis and Vivian Bagnall. Andrea Miller, daughter of Que and Linda Miller, will perform a vocal solo entitled, I Need a Hero." she is a senior at Gunnison Valley High School. The daughter of Karl and Finlinson, Carolyn Finlinson is a senior at North Joyce Sanpete High School. She will perform a piano solo entitled, Etude by Kabalevsky. Kristy Lynn Casperson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Kristie Lynne Shore Casperson is a 1992 graduate of Manti High School. For her talent Kristy will perform a humor-ou- s reading entitled, An Easterns Letter to Her Son. Debbie Jo Coates, a 1992 graduate of North Sanpete High School, is the daughter of Alice Coates. She will perform a vocal solo entitled, Everything I Do, I Do It for You. Karen Barton, daughter of Donald and Barbara Sue Barton, is a senior at Manti High School. She will perform a piano solo entitled, LOrage by Friedrich Burgmuller. Master and mistress of ceremonies will be Joseph and Marianne Thompson. Mrs. Thompson is the former Miss She is skilled in Utah, 1987-88- . music and dance and performed in the production, Saturdays Warriors. Mr. Thompson has entertained professionally all of his life. He performed for USO Tours overseas and entertains for Six Flags in Baltimore, Maryland. The couple has performed together throughout the Intermountain West. They live in Orem and have one daughter.
