Show Page 6 Thursday, February 4, 1993 Messenger Manti Elementary School Happenings Eric Nelson, son of Mary and Gary Nelson, recently returned from Europe. Following his graduation from Utah State University in Political Science, Eric went to the BYU Study Abroad at the Jerusalem Center in Israel. At the end of the session, Eric toured Europe by himself on a Eurorail pass. He missed seeing his parents who have accepted a job in Jerusalem, when he went to Europe. Eric is presently looking for work and he will later work on his Masters Degree in Political Science. Tom Osmond of Ephraim was the guest "Hero of the Month" at Manti Elementary last week. Thanks to the PTA, Tom was able to talk with the students about growing up as a deaf person. He fulfilled a mission in Canada, being the first deaf missionary. He taught himself to play the piano, and received a diploma from the School of the Deaf in Ogden. Tom urged the children to "be the best they can", and not feel sorry for themselves for their weaknesses or disabilities. Sharon Curl and daughter, Kim, have moved to Heber City where they have both found Florence Johnson is now home from the hospital. Her ribs have been cracked from falls, and she will need to rest quietly. and Sarah Finlinson had a mission farewell in Fillmore on Sunday, January 31, and a mission farewell in the Ephraim 3rd Ward on Sunday, January 17. Mark entered the MTC on February 3 in preparation for his mission to the Warsaw, Poland Mission. Since moving to Ephraim in August, the Finlinsons have had two daughters marry and one son leave on a mission. i'iiiiW'iin Damon Bolli was sustained as second counselor in a Bishopric in Provo on January 17. His wife, Kelly andher parents, Scott and Barbara Callister and Damons parents, Gerhard and Melody Bolli were all able to be in Provo for the meeting. Julie Ray, daughter of Gary and Nancy Ray is engaged to Russell Stevens, son of Grant and Aim Stevens. They plan to marry February 19. Mark Finlinson, son of Ken Larry and Elaine Christensen were pleased by the news that their daughter, Kayla will marry Scott Larsen, of Salt Lake City, on March 27. Scout leaders attend basic training The first Varsity Scout basic training took place Jan. 14, 15 and 16 and was hosted by the Sanpete District The three-da- y event was attended by over 16 scout leaders, including Manti Elementary students enjoying the Lyceum "Sky and Forest Friends", which was presented recently. Students learned about animal habits as well as being able to examine first hand a bobcat, porcupine, sparrowhawk, and raven. Called to Serve LDS Missions Ty Murray will serve in California Spanish Mission Elder Ty 0. Murray has been called to serve in the California Ventura Mission, Spanish speaking. TV is the son of Phillip and Vickie Murray of Ephraim. . He is a graduate of Manti High School and has been attending Snow College. Ty is also a member of the Manti National Guard Unit and graduated from basic training at Ft Sill, Oklahoma in August of 1992. Ty will speak at a farewell in the Ephraim 3rd Ward on Sunday, February 14 at 12:15 p.m. Following the farewell there will be a dinner held for family and training chairman Curtis Anderson of Gunnison and Utah National Parks Council representative Dennis Gillie. Participants and staff members included Carl Winters, Fairview; Kerry King, ML Pleasant; Neal Cox, Frank Krieger and Lamar Cook, Ephraim; Ray Miller, Moroni; Dirk Correnti, Ford Brady, Alan Braithwaite, Joel Wilson and Joe Schrotz, Manti. Paul Burgess brought another Varsity Coach from Fillmore to attend Friday and Saturday training sessions. The training program was put on to help Varsity Coaches with fundamentals of Varsity Scouting.
