Show Eaaae February 17. 1994 Messenoer-Entemris- e. has long history BST controversy With or without labels on your milk cartons identifying it, bovine somatotropin (BST) has been around since the pituitary gland. It has always been in miik and always will be. Despite the controversy generated this week by the marketing of Posilac, a BST supplement produced by Monsanto, this growth hormone is far from new. It may be the most thoroughly studied of all hormones and has undergone years of scrutiny and research, said Clell Bagley, Utah State University Extension veterinarian. BST is a natural protein hormone produce in the pituitary glands of all cattle. It occurs naturally in milk and turns feed into growth for the young and milk for mature cows. Extensive research shows BST to be safe for humans and animals, Bagley said. The genetically engineered form of BST by Monsanto enables dairy fanners to inject their cows with this hormone to increase milk production by as much as 10 to 15 percent Studies of BST date to the 1930s. To help give a clearer perspective of it history, the following chronology was compiled by Bagley. 1930 Scientists learned that milk production increased when injecting pituitary extracts of BST into lactating dairy cows. The work to obtain the extract was so demanding that only small amounts were available for even limited research. Children suffering from hypopi-tuitar- y dwarfism were treated from this crude extract from caule. The bovine extract was given by injection in relatively large doses. It was not successful An extract from human pituitary glands was successful by extremely difficult to obtain. 1940s - During World War II, Great Britain desperately needed milk. A Crude extract was used to increase milk production, but there was too little available to be of benefit. 1955 - Scientists isolated purified form of BST. It could only be obtained from Pituitary glands of cows. 1970s - Recombinant DNA technology developed leading to volume production of BST. 1982 Recombinantly produced human insulin introduced Himalayan. It is identical to natural human insulin and is made possible through biotechnology. Today almost all insulin used for human injection comes from this manufacturing technique. The procedure for production of BST proved to be conceptually identical. 1985 - The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) declared that milk and meat from cows are safe for human consumption. 19iy - Recombinantly produced human growth hormone introduced human somatotropin to treat dwarfism in somatotropin deficient children. The process is similar to BST use. 1990 - The human safety of milk and meat from cows was affirmed in a published paper of The Journal ed peer-review- of the American Medical Association" and Science. Also, an independent panel of the National Insti tutes of Health unanimously reaffirmed the human safety aspects of BST. 1991 -- The Office of Technology Assessment, at the request of theU.S. Congress, reaffirmed the human safety of milk and meat from cows. Also, the Journal of clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism published a article noting growth hormone does not pose any additional peer-re-view- ed risk to the consumer. 1993 - FDA regulators approved the sale of BST, proclaiming it safe for humans and dairy cows. A y moratorium was established before sales could begin. Jan. 6, 1994 - The U.S. Office of 90-da- Management and Budget reported that the net national economic impact of BST usage is expected to be positive." The report stated that although the government will spend more on price supports for dairy program because of BST, those costs will be offset within 10 years. Part of this is due to Infants and Children (W1Q, which provides aid to pregnant or lactating women and their young children. Feb. 4, 1994 - Moratorium ended. The genetically engineered version of BST was allowed to be sold on the market. Feb. 8, 1994 - The FDA released guidelines outlining what should and should not be said about BST. The agency ruled that consumers can be told whether the milk they buy comes from cows treated with BST. They cant be told that milk from untreated cows is any better or safer.
