An interesting thing has occurred in some gardens and com fields this year. A process com breeders call nicking has been upset Nicking is the coordination of tasseling and sulking. As might be expected it is controlled genetically. Breeders must not only be cognizant of the process but they manipulate it to protect hybrids. Since the tassels are the male flowers that produce the pollen and the silks are the pistils of the female flowers it is important that sulking and tasseling occur at the same time. Nicking can be upset by environmental conditions such as we have experienced this year. Hot dry weather hastens pollen production but doughty conditions retard sulking. This accounts for and describes what has been seen in some gardens and fields. I have been in a patch of field com and sweet com in a garden that had have affected corn both tasseled two or more weeks previously and only a few or no silks had shown until two weeks or more later and on many stalks and silks had not yet emerged, but the developing ear could be found by cutting and stalk open at the appropriate place. What will happen in these situations is the development of some sort of ear that may have few or no kernels. The number of kernels will depend on how much overlap there was in the test pollen released and the earliest silk emergence. Besides the effect on coordination the of sulking and tasseling heat and moisture stress can cause other problems with development of the reproductive structures as was discussed faff Arts and heritage festival MEDIA Mail by Sept. 10th, 1994 to: (CHECK ONE) Buick Qualify! mainly with beans and tomatoes and their relatives. These same problems can occur to some extent in com. Pollen development and pollen tube growth can be affected as can development of the ovules (egglike structure in the female flower part).
