Last Fridays doubleheader with Morgan began with a Lady Templar 14-- 6 victory over the Lady Trojans in the opener that saw a flock of Manti double base hits. Stacy Coxs home run brought in two runs; Pristy Shaw and Emily Walker tripled; Amber Lyon and Dana Peacock had doubles. Dana Peacock did the throwing and the Lady Templars led all the way. But the second was apparently cut from a different piece of cloth. Morgan scored five runs before the Lady Templars made their move. But score they did, with runs in the fifth inning producing lead. The Lady Templars a achieved it with Amy Jones homer, Amber Pierros triple and Amber Lyons double, along with a couple of singles and two walks. But the Lady Trojans came 1 tie in the sixth back for a 1 1 1 -5 11-1- inning. Medals were awarded to all winners and runnersup. Presentations were made by the veteran tennis coach and player, Bart Nelson of Snow College and Mr. Evan Excell, Executive Secretary of the Utah High School Activities Association. Larry Henrie of Coach Gunnison received a placque for being named Outstanding coach by the coaches and I BYU. Coach Icnric has revived tennis interest at Gunnison Valley High School in recent years and has produced several outstanding teams. 2-- A 2-- A MHS baseball team loses first game, clinches title By Nate Gedge The Manti High School baseball team finished the 1995 regular season with two games against traditional rival Gunnison. Manti won the first dame, an 3 victory in Gunnison. But the feisty Bulldogs came back the next day to hand the Templars their first loss of the year, a 12-- 5 decision at Manti. Manti won the region crown, with a 13-- 1 Region 12 record and 21-- 1 overall standing. Gunnison finished second. In the first game, Alan Cox 8-- pitched the complete game victory. Cox held Gunnison to no runs and only three hits through the first five innings. Cox and Kevin Callister had doubles for Manti. In the second game, Bryan Keisel was on the mound for Manti. Keisel gave up two home runs to Gunnison, hit by Shane Knudsen and Christian Sanders. Alan Cox had three of Mantis six hits, including two home runs. Manti has a quarter final game Thursday, May 1, at Manti High School. Athletes qualify for state meet By Nate Gedge The Manti High School track team qualified several athletes at the Region 12 Championships held at Millard High School on May 6. Although the boys and girls team did not place high overall (boys 6th; girls 7th), Manti has a chance for a good showing at the State track meet Friday and Saturday, May 12 and 13 at BYU. Listed below are those athletes who qualified for State and the races that they will run. In parentheses are the place the athletes took at Region.
