He is so taken by all the cats he meets that lie cant decide which is the best to take home, and thus hundreds, and thousands, and millions, of cats follow him home. As the story goes, the cats become quite a handful for the old man and his wife. The cats are so numerous, they vie for food and at lection. A terrible fight ensues among the cats and they miraculously disappear, except for one small kitten that remains, providing love and affection for the old man and woman. Looking out on our porch sometimes makes me feel that these same cats followed me home. As cats come from many directions, some yellow, some calico, some toms, and some kittens. I w ish (although I have great affection for all of them) they, too, would disappear. For these small creatures represent many neighbors and families who have not taken the responsibility for their pets. The advertised free kitten is brought home with good intentions. It is loved and cuddled fora while, then as it grows, families lose interest. The growing cat has to fend for itself. Many times food and water bow Is are left empty. No ever-changin- g, for Manti High School and Ephraim Middle School. one is there to care for the cat. She is never taken to the vet for shots or spaying. She turns from fluffy to scraggly and sickly, from affectionate to scratchy. She starts to wander the neighborhood in search of food and companionship. As spring approaches, she disappears for a while and then suddenly, she is not alone. From a distant woodpile four cute and cuddly, but wild, kittens emerge, Because our mother cat no longer trusts the people who have neglected her, she and her new family go in search of food. A few havens exist for them, and so these new animals appear on my porch, one of those havens. As we take on the responsibility of a free kitten, it is not a short term commitment, nor a cheap one. Feeding, providing medical care, spaying and neutering, caring for and hugging our new pet should be included in the decision to adopt. Adopt a pet, not on a whim, but consider the long term care of these animals. If we choose our kittens with thought and responsibility, they wont become nuisances scratching, crying, sickly, and scraggly cats. We wont be burdened with hundreds, and thousands, and millions of cats. But our pet will give us much love and affection, and we will to them. Mrs. Whitaker was a graduate of Manti High School and continued her education at Snow College and Utah State University. She has taught in Delta and Richfield for the past four years.
