Show Thursday, September 12, 1996 Page Messenger-Enterpris- e From the Press Box by Tricia Call It was a week of unusual happenings. Tricia Call goes to a football game, a BYU football game, no less! BYU cheers for USU. And Coach Edwards smiles for the camera! Getting myself into the Manti I lomecom ing spirit, 1 donned State my Templar-rejacket and went to the game. Regardless of the outside temperature, I can always count on being d to handle the refrigerated press-bod BYU-Arkans- as under-dresse- x. Sure enough, five minutes into the first quarter, the guys in blue out on the field are hot - while the gal in red up in the press-bo- x is shivering with blue fingers! I am so sports-illiterathat I went to see a good friend of mine, former BYU Center and team captain, Phil Nauahi before the game. He taught me a few things that make these football players more than just big guys who can knock over on-- te For excoming freight trains with a glancing shoulder-shruthe has center be to all from across ample, guys watching him and match up the players on his team so that his smallest guy isnt playing against an opponent the size of a Mack truck. The problem is the shuffling that the other guys do while the center prepares to hike the ball to the quarterback. Then the center has to determine what type of linebacker is directly in front of him, whose main goal in life is to run over the center and to sack the quarterback. Is that guy a swimmer or a grabber? Which arm does he lead out his attack? Or is he just a bulldozer intent on mowing over the center? All of this happens in the matter of five seconds or less. I gained a new respect for football players. Theyre not just brawn; they have to have a few brains too. By the way, that Templar red jacket even got a smile out of Coach Edwards. This man has got to be the worlds greatest poker player. One can never tell, even when hes goofing off with Sparky Mortimer on those banking commercials if hes g. 1 1 really happy with how tilings are going. I les the master of deadpan. During his press conference, even though his team trounced the opponent, he never broke a grin. I le told how they had gone out and executed pretty much the way they had planned. They he was pleased with regretfully had a few injuries, but how the game went. Pleased?! Is that all?! The score was BYU 58 to ASUs 9, not counting three touchdowns that didnt count due to penalties. I went up to him after the game and told him I was writing I first Could sports column; my get a picture of you with me? He said, Sure! There was my red jacket on my arm, and as the camera man took aim, I whipped the jacket behind my back, and said, I cant have a red jacket in a photo with Coach Edwards! and quickly hid the jacket out of sight. The results were recorded in black and white. ll, Girls tennis team wins 2 matches By Wilbur Braithwnite Barkdull, Erin Rasmussen and Sheleen Willniore paired up in No. doubles to down Robi Aguiar and In the No. Melody Boyer 2 doubles Amy Blauer and Jenny Frame won 2 from Megan Bond and Jennifer Bond. But there I was, right off the right when it happened. The announcer comer of the south end-zohad just stated the results of the USUUofU game, when a roar erupted from the stadium that sounded akin to a touchdown play from the home team. Wow!, I thought; Im here to hear BYU fans cheer for a USU victory! This is awesome! Now Im all geared up for the Templars homecoming game against the Millard Eagles on Friday. I just have to find out the answer to the question I forgot to ask Phil - what does the quarterback do to get all those linebackers on the opposite team so ticked off that theyd want to plow through the center to put him in a sack?
