Show Page 6 Thursday, March 13, 1997 Messenger-Enterpris- e Concert, dance will celebrate 100 years of music at Snow By Dean ODriscoIl have played a major role in the Thursday evening, March development of bands 13 in public schools throughout Utah. Frank Christensen established the program in 1904 that allowed students to receive diplomas and become certified as band and choir conductors. This program produced many of the significant music educators in the state in the beginning of the 20th century. One man who did extremely Snow College will celebrate 100 years of music at the college with a concert and a dance in the new Greenwood Student Center. This celebration vv ill commemorate the establishment of the band program at Snow College in 1897. The evening will begin with a concert in the Crane Theatre put on by the colleges symphonic band and then later Thursday night the Jazz Ensemble will play big band music from the 30s and 40s for the dance in the student center. All proceeds from the evening will go toward music scholarships to help continue the tradition of great music at Snow College. The band originated at Snow in September of 1897 under the direction of Jimmy Clawson, a cornet player of local renown. The early beginnings of the program well upon completing his educa- tion at Snow was N.W. Christiansen. After becoming certified, he taught and directed at Snow and then headed north where he spent a number of years leading the band program at Utah State University. He became somewhat of a legend in the musical circles in Utah. There is some talk about music coming to Snow College even before they were ready for it. Jensen, received the NACD Auxiliary Distinguished Service Award for 1997 for many years of dedicated service to the vention theme, encompasses attracting and strengthening partnerships with NRCS and other entities. Larsen uncovered much of the rich history of the beginnings of Snows band program while doing research for his Masters of Music degree from BYU. The entire evening of music is open to the public.
