Show PAGE TEMPLAR TRUMPET 6 Clubs and Organizations Raising the roof by:Chris Helms The Manti High School ForensicsDebate team has started the 1998 year with a bang. The team has travelled to three tournaments so far this year. They debuted at the Western States Forensics Championships held at The College of Eastern Utah on December 19th and 20th. The tournament was a good learning experience for the team as they competed against 20 schools from Utah and Nevada. Although Manti was one of the smallest schools at the tournament they still paw ed that the team was a force to be reckoned with. In Duo Interpretation Chris Helms and Gabe Hampton won first place with their piece from Arthur Miller's All My Sons." Chris Helms and Gabe I Iampton both broke finals in Dramatic Interpretation, as well. Gabe won second place with his piece, I Rita lav worth and the Shaw shank Redemption, by Stephen King. Chris piece A Time To Kill by John Grisham won him first place in that category. Rachel Elmer w on second place in both Prose and Poetry with her pieces Jessica and Tommys Prayer, respectively. Chris the recipient of the Candice Cruz award, Helms w as Special this was awarded to the top Senior at the tournament, and he was awarded a full tuition and housing scholarship to the College of Eastern Utah. Gabe Hampton and Rachel Elmer were both im ited to try out for CPU's forensics team as well. On January 10th. Manti ligh took 25 students to the Ialnant Valley Invitational held at Delta High School. Sliarie Stewart won 4th Place in Impromptu. Chris I lelms won 3rd Place in Eincoln-Dougla- s Debate and Jill Cragun won 2nd DePlace in Lincoln-Dougla- s bate. Manti had a strong showing against some very tough 1 competition. On January 18th, Manti went to the Gunnison Valley Invitational. Andrew Tate won 1st place in SPAR, Jill Cragun and Sharie Stewart were finalists in Impromptu, and Chris Helms won 2nd place in Impromptu Speaking. Mike Liddell won 4th and Gabe Hampton won 2nd in Student Congress. Chris Helms won 2nd Place in Lincoln-DouglDebate and Top Speaker at the as Tournament. Coach Eloise Liddell had this to say about the performance of the team. "These tournaments have shown why Manti has a great chance to win the state title. I he team will compete at the Warrior 31st January Wars held at Tay lorsv ille I ligh School in Salt Lake City. They w ill then compete on February 13th and 14th at the Abe Lincoln Invitational held on the campus Ephraim Youth City Council by: Kristin White The Ephraim Youth City Council have been busy w ith their service project for the year. The goal of the council is to tear down the current play- The council hopes to have this playground installed during the month of July. If you are interested in donating please contact Cidnee Beazer at ground in the Ephraim City Park and replace it with a long lasting play ground. This playground will accomodate all children from toddlers to 12 years old. The council w ill repair the current sw ings. They are looking to provide a swing for toddlers, and a swing for disabled kids. 283-426- 2 Kathy Nell 283-400Thegoal is to make this playground a safer and funner place for kids to play. If any students are interested in Study Buddies it is held every Wednesday from three to four o'clock in the Ephraim Elementary. The time is spent helping the kids learn and have fun. It is a great ser-- v ice to get to know young children and help them succeed in school. 9. They are hoping to raise $28. 60. The cost w ill cover the 1 amount for the playground, installation fee. and money to repair the sw ings.
