I Mr. Miller Speaks Out As I observe the students walking between classes I often think to myself, What a quality group of students we have at Manti High School. I don't believe you could find a school anywhere with a student body of greater quality than ours. All of you seem to treat each other well. It is an honor to work with you and to help provide you with a quality high school experience you deserve. As I watch you and in- teract with you notice that there is variety among you. 1 Many of you are involved with extracurricular activities. Many of you perform well in the classroom and consistently strive for good grades. However, all of you have special talents of some sort. All of you arc part of this quality student body to which I'm referring. You arc among those 1 am thinking of now who have great potential. 1 worry that some of you may not see the talent that I see, the potential that you do have. A Word From Steve Sorenson Snow-Colleg- gree. My college experience showed me that a very average kid scholastically at Manti High School can go to college and succeed. I think one of the greatest serv ices I could provide you young people I work with is to help y ou understand your potential. If you arc an average student, and you don't consider y ourself to be one of the brightest in you class, dont sell yourself short. President the by:Steve Sorenson, Freshman Class President was just pondering by in myself the bathroom after having finished reading the December issue of the Friend when I realized how many cool people there arc in our really cool school. I decided to make a list, and so here it is: 1. McLain Franks: I this mean, guy practically invented cool. He's a skater, and punkstcr. straight-edge- r I 2. Zack Black, Mr. Afro: Talk about vertical leap. I don't see how he does it. I don't see a shade of difference between the two of us. 3. Mrs. Liddell: She's a mother of six, and she can make tuka cow with the best of them. And handcuffs can't compare with her Grip. 4. Evan Thompson: He should wear a name tag labelled Mr. Cool. It's all ego with this kid. And there are lots of other cool people other than the ones I've mentioned, but they refuse to pay cash. But anyway, I think our school would be a better place if we modeled ourselves after these groovy kids. A place where the lion would lay down with the lambs. RN. reports the Life Skills class will begin on February 5th at 7.00 P.M. in the high school. Mrs. Jensen indicates she must restrict the class to 40 students, so anyone interested must call her at 835-- 8 171 or 835-- 3 131 to reserve a scat in the class. We have received applications for the UVSC expanding Your Horizons program for women interested in math and science careers. This will be held on March 7th on the Orem campus and will cost $12.00. The sooner the application is sent in, the better chance the student has to attend the sessions of her choice. Other opportunities will be the Assistant for the Health Science Academy at the University of Utah on February' 14th. There is no fee for this program. Please stop at the Counseling Center for the application. Salt Lake Community College will be hosting high school students on Tuesday, February 3rd, and Thursday, February 12th between 8:00 A M. and 2:00 P.M. Devry Institutes will meet with the junior and senior students on February 3rd. Career programs include Business And Accounting, Computers, Electronic Engineering and Technicians, and Telecommunications Management. Many colleges and universities have SCHOLARSHIP DEADLINES fast approaching, including the University of Utah, Weber State, Utah Valley State College, February 1st, and BYU.SUU, and Ricks on February 15th. Snow College, Utah State University, and Slat Lake Community College deadlines arc March 1st. Universities want to award scholarships, but students MUST meet these deadlines. Admissions deadlines will vary. Students also need to be filing for Pell grants. Parents can help by filing their income tax as soon as possible. Current tax information is required. Other deadlines: Applied Technology Education scholarships for students attending or completing classes in fields of Business, Agriculture. Health Science, Family Science. Trade and Technical, is due on February 15th. The Natural Resource award must be postmarked February 2nd, and the Electronic Engineering award at BYU is February 1 5th. The American Legion Auxiliary Essay Contest has the title of American: My Love, My Life, My Country. The 450-50- 0 words essaja should be and the deadline is February 20.
