Show Thursday, April 15, 1999 Messenger-Enterpris- Page 7 e Fourth graders sponsor Manti Sesquicentennial Committee notes upcoming activities to be observed County Fair at school Karen The Fourth Grade County Fair was held on March 26 at Ephraim Elementary School. Each student is assigned a county in Utah. They gather facts and information about that county in a variety of ways. Many request information by writing letters to the county courthouses. The students also make a map and a display of various facts about their county. Mr. Bruce Bartholomews fourth grade class did something a little different this year. They put on a program for their families op March 3 . The program was all Buchanan The Black Hawk War was an important event in the early By about Utah. The students were dressed in costumes that represented different parts of Utahs history. The program was full of information about Utah in both word and song. Presidential Physical Fitness Award testing will be held on April 12 and April 16. Hogle Zoo personnel will be doing presentations on April 12. The Snow College Physical Education Class will be doing recess on April 14. The third grade World Habitat Fair is on April 16 at p.m. CORE testing will take place April 1 19-2- 3. history of Sanpete County. A video tape has been created telling about the war and detailing its impact on this area. Copies of this video have been placed by the Sesquicentennial Committee in the Manti City Library. They can be checked out at the library for personal viewing. A publication, Barn Again, telling about and picturing many historic old bams in the county is available free at local businesses in Manti. This particular booklet features barns in Sanpete County and is part of a national campaign commemorating these old buildings throughout the United States. Several sesquicentennial quilts are being created by local citizens. They will feature hand quilting, original designs, some drawn and painted, some pieced, and all beautiful. They will be given away at a drawing later in the year. Donation tickets will be sold and proceeds will benefit civic projects in the community. Wilbur Braithwaite is chairman of a sesquicentennial song writing contest and Lillian Fox chairs the writing contest. This will be an opportunity for everyone to bring out those hidden The writing contest talents. deadline is April 30. Details on the songwriting competition are yet to be announced. The Wagon Train Trek is seeking participants. Alv in Kilmer and Richard MacFarlane, of this event, encourage everyone who would like to be part of this adventure, to sign on. The trek will beginon July 21. and arrive in Manti on July 24. There are posters placed throughout the county with details on how to get involved. The Sesquicentennial Cowboy Poets Festival w ill be May 22, at the Manti House Inn Gazebo. Contact Chairman Sam Deleew if you would like to be a presenter. And be sure to plan to attend this entertaining evening. Sesquicentennial mementoes are being sold by members of the Swimming Pool Committee as a fundraiser. These will be special remembrances of this celebration. Mr. Never, Manti Elementary PTA News By Dona Brady The Zoo Mobile, from Hogle Zoo, came to Manti Elementary School on Tuesday, April 13. There were four presenters, who visited each class, giving presentations to the students. The topics followed the Utah State Science Core Curriculum, teaching the students about the different classes of animals, their characteristics, habits, their places in respect to the food chain and the environmental issues surrounding the protected species. The students were also taught about protecting the natural resources and caring for the land so that man can coexist with the many diversified species of plant and animal life on this planet. The Utah State Core Testing in math, language, arts and science will begin on April 19 and continue through the week. Parents are asked to help their children to get sufficient rest, a good breakfast each morning and to counsel with them about trying their best, but not to be afraid or stressed about the testing. Human Pursuits Programs scheduled for presentation at Ephraim Library Dr. Howard Quackenbush from BYU will be hosting the next two Human Pursuits programs at the Ephraim Public Library. The program. The Bridges that Unite Us, uses literature as a vehicle to promote understanding of Latino culture. This months book, Dreaming in Cuban, will be discussed on April 2 beginning at 7 p.m. in the basement lecture room of the Ephraim Public Library. Books in both English and Spanish are available at the library. Dr. L. Howard Quackenbush has worked for many years at 1 BYU. He received his degree from the University of Illinois, and has dedicated 30 years of his life to the study of Latin American lit OPY : i erature. He has been studying Cuban and Cuban exile literature for more than five years, and he has dedicated a good deal of his recent research time to Caribbean studies. He has been a lecturer and advisor to the Utah Council of the Humanities. He has written three books, more than 30 articles, five extensive translations, and numerous reviews on various subjects regarding Latin American literature. He has been a Kennedy Center Research Scholar, a recipient of the Karl G. Maeser Aw ard for scholarship, and he presently holds the Ludwig-Weber-Sieba- Professorship. ch Spend money for copies that come out looking like the inside of a used vacuum bag!
