They helped lound the Intermountain West. Their contributions as community and one-filt- h ehureh leaders, doelors. edueators. larmers and temple builders left a neh legacy. At one time oer 40 per-eeof Utah's population claimed to be of Danish ancestry. The sear 2000 marks the 150"' anniversary of the emigration from Denmark. To honor their accomplishments, a group ol descendants entitled "Denmark 2000 are ssorking ss ilh government and ehureh leaders on both sides of the Atlantic to celebrate the event which triggered the mass migration Iromthal small country in IS50. Two statues w ill be presented to the Danes. They w ill permanently symholieihc goodw ill between Utah and Denmark. Dennis Smith, renow ned Alpine. Utah sculptorol Danish ancestry and former student at the Royal Academy of Art m Copenhagen, has been commissioned to create the two statues. The unveiling ceremonies will occur during the first week of July 2(XX). with dignitaries from government, education. ehureh. and the Royal House During the yeai 2IXX). extensive celebrations will occur throughout Denmark including the exhibition ol C'.C.A. Christensen's paintings at the North Jutland Museum of Art. a new video depicting the Danish pioneer exodus, a Mormon History Association conference, and a reception by the Mayor of Copenhagen at the town hall. The Copenhagen Temple w ill be dedicated, missionary reunions and a Danish regional ehureh eonlerenee w ill also be part of the festivities that year. In Utah. It has. how ever, tremendous potential loshare the history of the impact of Denmark in the building of the ehureh and the founding of the West, a story that is not widely known in Scandinavia.
