I have also noted that many of the repeat offenders have charges such as "intoxication", "DUI", "possession of controlled substances", and other charges relating to the Hunting season is here. Over the next month and a half over 15,000 hunters will come to the Manti-LaSNational Forest with their motor homes, trailers and OHVs to find that elusive elk or deer. It's a good time to visit your local Forest Service office, obtain a travel map, and become familiar al I Irritated with Ephraim City To the Editor: Hey, have you tree lovers noticed those deceased black willow trees on the north of Ephraim and how beautiful they have been this summer? I am being sarcastic of abuse of drugs and alcohol. It is apparent that what may begin in a person as "having a good time", and "going to parties", may lead to drug or alcohol dependence, with all the connected consequences that come with any addiction. course; I wonder how they would look if all that dead wood was also note that there are in this newspaper, advertisements from Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous, groups committed to helping anyone with drug or alcohol dependencies. These groups do not spend vast amounts of money and are made up advertising their services. They are of recovering addicts and alcoholics themselves. Their main purpose is to stay clean and sober themselves, and help others to achieve this state. The only thing their advertisements make mention of is their meeting times and locations. It is completely up to individual decision whether or not anyone has a problem, and needs help. The consequences to our community of active addiction are tremendous and Anyone in the grip of any addiction (and it should be noted there are many addictions not related to drugs or alcohol), loses touch with reality in the mad quest to "find ways and means to get more." The lengths an addict will pursue are not always violent, but they may be. About a month ago, there was an unsuccessful attempt to burglarize Elliott's Pharmacy, certainly not the first, nor the last attempt. Discovering the pharmacy impregnable, the would-b- e thiefs attempted to break down our rear entrance newspaper door (which is adjacent to the pharmacy) to gain access. They were not successfull, and the only result is we are ordering a new steel rear door. This episode points to the desperation an addict who cannot get what they want must feel. This desperation is what causes addicts to commit crimes, neglect families, lie, steal, and generally destroy their own values, in this quest to keep their addiction I 12-st- non-profi- trimmed and cut out? The city council agreed with me one night at council meeting that the dead limbs in the trees were a hazard to cars driving down the highway. Then last summer the city had 8 of those trees removed. But if you look at them now there are many big dead limbs that could come down with a big wind, or heavy t, 1 snow. However, they must not pose a big enough hazard for the city to do anything about it. When the city was removing those trees, the homeowners along Main Street where the trees grow were told that the trees belong to the city and they had no say about which trees stayed or went. But when it comes to pruning and caring for the trees it is the homeowners responsibility. Martha Olsen had the seven trees in front of her home trimmed Wants skateboard park alive. Sooner or later the judicial system will catch up with most addicts, and hopefully, the judge and probation officers can offer the addicts a choice; incarceration or treatment of some kind. An addict may choose treatment, but not have any money to check into a center. The aforementi ned programs, called "AA" and "NA", offer the solution of help at no cost. Neither program costs anything, in fact, both proclaim that "it costs nothing to belong To the Editor: I am writing this to inform you that Ephraim needs a Skateboard Park. I think that it would be a good idea for Ephraim City to get a skateboard park so that people can skate safely. Currently, skaters have to travel to Provo or Salt Lake to skate in a skateboard park. Skateboard Parks are the only place it is really legal to skate- to the program." There is one AA meeting in Ephraim (8 p.m., each Monday), and it has been in existence for years. This week there will also be an NA meeting, in the same location, the Ephraim City Building basement, (8 p.m., each Thursday). If you know of anyone with a drug or alcohol problem, you may suggest to them that help is available. This help won't cost them any money, their anonymity will be protected, and they can find a way to overcome their addictions along with discovering a support system of people who have suffered as they have suffered. Most individuals who can successfully recover from addiction, on a basis, become responsible, productive members of society again. They leam to right their wrongs, make that their addictions stole from amends, and gain the them. Their families benefit, the community benefits, and the addicts themselves benefit. It may be you have a relative or friend who you think needs help. If you want to see how these meetings work, you are welcome to attend, providing you respect the anonymity of those board. Many times when I go downtown, I see skaters in the streets or in the parking lots. This is not safe for the skaters or for the automobile drivers. Skateboarding is fun, but it can be dangerous if it is not performed in a safe place. Please help us convince Ephraim City to get a skate board park. present. The disease of addiction is deadly, make no mistake. The DUIs of today may turn into the automobile homicides of tomorrow, and the intoxication charges of today may become obituaries tomorrow. It is not a game. It is not about partying or having fun. A teenager or young adult may tell you to lighten up, it is not a big deal to drink a little, or smoke a little pot. It may be, in fact, the beginning of a deadly disease, and those with the problem desperately need help. Take advantage of the programs of recovery if you need it. The life you save may be your own.
