Show ADVICE/TELEVISION Cen nn ‘ Standard-Examiner TELEVISION a's Most done.” W ee id Wa we've who evel explained the retrompective program W Il also be something if we caught some- eature the capture of Ed Childress one?’ ~ As it turned out, they did — and quickly. In the show’s first episode, a profile of David James Roberts — an accused murderer and rapist on the FBI’s Most Wanted List — led to his capture. “It’s been such a platform, such an odyssey,” Walsh said. “The best part of the show is (when) victims murderer the show has featured seven times in IlS SIX years on theair. an accused Walsh's own story is relatively well-known. His 6-year-old son, Adam, was abducted and murdered in 1981. leading Walsh to lobby Congress to pass what would become the Missing Children’s Bill (giving parents access to FBI records that might help them find their missing children). After Walsh was portrayed and befriended by actor Daniel J. Travanti in a 1983 TV movie about Adam’s kidnapping, the two paired to produce a 1987 HBOspecial, of crimes come up and say, ‘Thanks. You gave us the closure we were looking for.’ ” As part of Walsh’s visit to Utah, he was made an honorary member of “Good Cops Utah,” Channel 13°s weekly segment (airing Fridays on its 9 p.m. newscast) that highlights the work of law enforcement officers locally. Movie explores unusual murder case Delbert, Bill, Lyman and Roscoe Ward lived together all of their lives in a two-room shack with no running water or phone service on a dairy farm in rural Munnsville, N.Y. They slept two to a bed, were generally filthy and scruffy, and kept to themselves. In the summer of1990, Bill died n bed. Subsequently. Delbert was charged with murdering Bill. The town rallied their support for Delbert and his brothers as thetrial date loomed. Did he or didn’t he kill him? And. if so, what might have been his motive? “Brother's Keeper” (Monday at 8 p.m. on KUED Channel 7) is an amazing documentary by Joe Berliner and Bruce Sinofsky, chronicling the story of the “Ward boys,” as the townsfolk call them. Thefilmmakers interview the reclusive | TV COLUMNIST Don Porter Standard-Examiner brothers, providing an intimate portrait of their existence and the unimaginable squalor in which they subsist. Berlinger and Sinofsky approach the subject in classic, unobtrusive cinemaverite style. Their cameras seek out local law enforcement officials. lawyers for the defense and prosecution, neighbors who previously paid no attention to the Wards, and finally are granted access to the highly dramatic murder trial. The filmmakers have created a perceptive peek intothe rural life- styles and attitudes of Munnsville. The support for the Wards is mercurial: While people vigorously defend Delbert, they still don’t really want to have muchto do with him. The attention coming Delbert’s way begins to change him, as hefeels he might actually be getting some respect and affection from the community. Ominously, it’s suggested a time or two that unscrupulous land developers might have had designs on’ the Wards’ 99 acres of farmland, and that this might have helped to drive Delbert’s prosecution. This aspect of the film — an investigation of the wayin which the local system of justice comes to grips with the case, and how long-standing personal and social prejudices and suspicions comeinto play — is but one of the things that makes this documentary so worthwhile. Palms sweaty no more, woman claps them in praise of advice DEAR ABBY: I’ve read your columns for years. You share so much information. Whether I agree or disagree, you are the best and I thank you. The reason I am writing is that I am a professional woman, age 46, and have sweaty palms only when I'm nervous. It has been a source of tremendous stress and embarrassment to me. But someone wrote to you last summer with the same problem — and you advised them to try Drysol. I finally got around to calling my doctor for an appointment — oh, happy day! Bless the man for writing in about it, and bless you, Abby, for printing it! Even though many readers may never write to you, please be assured that numerous columns are shared among families and friends. (I have mailed more than one over the years.) My son is now away at college and is the recipient of most of them these days. I started not to write this, but since this is my first time, I might as well go “all out.” I never felt like my shy, 15-year-old son and I really communicated about the subject of sex the way we should have, so I ordered your booklet, “What Every Teen Should Know,” and asked him to read it. He left it out in his room, and when some ofhis friends came DEAR ABBY aod Abigail Van Buren | Universal Press Syndicate over, there was a lot ofgiggling and so forth coming from his room. But I'm so glad it was there for them. I happen to know that after all the “ha-ha’s” were over, each guyleft with a better understanding of some of the problems theyface every day. — One of a million fans DEAR ONE OF A MILLION: | appreciate the kind words. Thank you, too, for the compliment about my teen booklet. You might be interested to knowthat the sections on contraception, sexually transmitted diseases and drugs have just been revised and updated — and the booklet has been expanded to include a section on date rape. DEAR ABBY: A family member recently died in a tragic accident, and the outpouring of generosity from the community was over- whelming. People sent flowers, cards. money and food. Unfortunately, many of these gifts had no return addresses. Abby, dishes, platters and cake tins can be returned. — Stumped in Seattle DEAR STUMPED: Thatbit of advice has been in my column numerous times, but it bears repeating. Readers, it would be a kindness to send cookies and cakes on paper plates, and hot dishes and salads in disposable foil pans, with your name, address and telephone number securely taped to the containers. DEAR ABBY: When I read your column about head lice, I reddened with indignation. Where did those people get off shunning “Alice” just because she had lice? I am only 12 and have a sister who is 6. Both of us go to private school, and we both have had head lice! Abby, everyone gets head lice at least once in their lives — especially little kids. I thought the person who wrote that mean letter was rude and obnoxious. — Jessica L. Needles, NewCastle, Del. P.S. I made a bet with myfriend Erin that this letter would get published. DEAR JESSICA: You won! Address all mail to: Dear Abby, P.O. Box 69440, Los Angeles, CA please ask your readers to attach 90069.
