Show r 3 I. WrT T , Lakeside Review, September 11, 1980, Pape 9A t Heidelberg: A Touch of A visit to the Heidelberg Restaurant located at the Rock Mill Farm in Farmington is like visiting Germany. Inside the old three-stor- y stone walls is found a treasure of antique furnishings and appointments gleaned from local pioneer families and mansions in from old, European-styl- e and around the San Francisco area. And the food is like a visit to the old world when a good meal, spirited polka music and hospitality were the enjoyments of the day. The Rock Mill Farm was purchased a year and a half ago by Tom Backman from the man who turned a portion of the farm into a restaurant some 20 years ago, Garth Naylor. Naylor, who successfully ran the first real atmosphere restaurant in Salt Lake, the Rubiayat, was looking for another building with a unique flavor when he came upon the mill. At the time it was owned by William Wood a farmer who had bought it in 1926 and used it to store farm produce. Naylor purchased most of the antique furnishings at a time when it Vvas still relatively easy and inexpensive to buy such things. The chairs came out of the old East High School Library. Most of the balustrades used in the staircase came from the old LDS mission homes on North State Street when they were torn down. The homes were originally on the Brigham Young Estate and were built for some of his married children. Much of the glass and many mantels and doors came from the mission homes, also. The rest came from antique dealers in and around San Francisco where it had been taken out of Victorian homes that were torn Old-Worl- $4J iy'.-y.'- , ft old-wor- down. The present owner plans to install covered walkways from the parking area to each of the buildings, and other improvements. The Old Rock Mill Farm has reached an age where a lot of major rejuvenation must take place in order for its survival, according to Backman. We plan to do a lot of refurbishing, leaving the same basic structure and atmosphere, he said. Backman said he plans to build cabins on several small European-styl- e the four acres above the Heidelberg. He also plans to have a center (just the right size for family reunions, with cobblestone streets connecting the layout. The staff at the Heidelberg offers tours throughout the Bountiful and Farmington area featuring pioneer homes and historical places of interest ending with lunch or dinner at the Heidelberg Restaurant and a tour of the complex at Rock Mill Farm.
