Show I'age 611, Lakenide Kewew Januarj 2, 1981 Sports Briefs: Boys Fastpitch League To For years, boys under 18 have spent their summers playing the great American past time of baseball. At the same time during recent years, the girls have been playing softball. And doing quite well. Last year, for example, Salt Lake had 2 fastpitch teams finish in the top 10 in the girls 18 and under national tournament while the Bountiful Bonnett Ball team took llth in the girls 12 and under nationals. Now, local softball officials are planning to organize a boys fastpitch program in the Wasatch front area. Utah State A.S.A. Commissioner A1 Hansen has announced an organizational meeting for players, parents coaches and any other interested parties. The meeting will be Wednesday, Jan. 28, 7 p.m. in room 323 of the Student Union Bldg, on the U of U campus. The primary purpose of the meeting is to determine the amount of interest in forming a boys fastpitch program: In addition, age groups, schedules, team formations and other topics will be discussed. To assist prospective young pitchers, special indoor pitching clinics have already been scheduled during February, March and April. Boys who dont turn 18 before Sept. 1 are eligible. Age groups for league play will be 18 and under, 15 and under, and 12 and under. League schedules will be set up in such a manner that players will be able to play both baseball and softball without conflicts. According to sponsors of the activity, Donkeyball is the same as regular basketball, however the players must play while riding a donkey! The stubborn mules make any attempt to move the ball almost impossible. Roy City Police Chief Julian Green said, This game should be a lot of fun for the departments and also the community. This is a family activity that any age can enjoy. Fire Chief Richard Waters is quick to state The Fire Department is looking for revenge after losing to the police in the softball challenge played last summer. We are hoping for good support from the community. Proceeds from this activity will go toward buying new equipment Tickets can be purchased from any member of the Roy Police or Fire Departments, at Builders Bargain Center 1780 W. 5600 S., or at the door. Ticket prices are: $2.50 adults; $1.50 children under 12; FREE. There is a .50 cent savings if tickets are purchased in advance. Coors involvement with the USVBA tour represents the first major corporate sponsorship of a National Amateur Sports Federation event since the boycott of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics. The 1981 Coors USVBA tour will include more than 30 matches across the country and feature Americas finest amateur volleyball players.
