A Baltimore native, Aler earned bachelors and master's degrees in voice at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., and has performed with most musical institutions in the Washington area. In 1977 he won first prize for men at the Concours International de Chant de Paris and first prize for the singing of French art songs. His opera career has included starring roles with opera companies throughout North America and in France and Belgium. He has also appeared in recital at Washingtons National Gallery and New Yorks Carnegie Hall. Hector Berlioz once said of his Requiem, "If I were threatened with the burning of all my works except one, it is for the Requiem that I would ask for mercy. Composed in 1837, the work calls for gigantic forces. It premiered at the Invalides in Paris on December 5, 1837, with a orchestra and a choir numbering 400 voices.
