Im glad that Weber State is hosting this year because theyre by far the superior school for holding a meet and that makes it easier for the athletes to preform at their best. Getting back to the numbers game, Flint says they wont play as big a role in the state meet as they do in region By Phil Kirkwood Sports Editor CLEARFIELD championship in qualities from a course, is one another Winning a region track takes several program. Talent, of proper coaching is leadership also plays an important role. But one major factor that cant be overlooked is numbers the number of athletes a team has competing. Its been known all year that Clearfield has had the numbers to claim the crownand thats exactly what competition because every athlete there is a state qualifier and not just competing to round out the field. In region, you can get by with numbers in most events, said Flint. But at the state meet, two or three athletes can do it for you. Thats why we pick Roy as a team to beat. They have some quality sprinters and have a few suprises in the field events. But the Falcons didnt win the region on numbers alone, they had some talent too superior talent. Leading the list is Mark Carter in the shot put and Brian runs. Wilcox in the 400 and Carter, a senior and team captian, has taken first in the shot in every meet eneterd this year and he also qualified in the discus. If we do as well at State as we did at Nate Long well be a strong bet for By Phil Kirkwood Sports Editor Bks CLEARFIELD To look at him, you wouldnt think Mark Carter from Clearfield was the states leading shot putter. He doesnt have a frame or stand 65. His muscle structure is solid, but it doesnt ripple or buldge with every movement. Hes more likened to the welterweight class lean, mean, fast and flexible. People just dont realize the power he has, that is, until he launches the iron sphere then they believe. Carter is the type especially when it comes time to talk to the press about track. His father, Ralph Carter was a state shot put champion himself and held the prep record for Ogden High back in 1955. Mark says his father and coach Flint have taught him most everything he knows and Flint says hes still learning. Carter says he trains from four to five hours a day after school for his events except on the day of a meet. Hell be training extra hard for the state meet. Ive got to work work hard for this one, said Carter, referring to the state meet. Im physically ready, but Ive got to get it together mentally think it through and get psyched up. A lot of it is pure emotion and psychological," said Flint about the shot. Hes (Carter) got some real power there. Hes samll for a shot putter, but he makes up for it with extreamly good technique and speed." Although Carters efforts in the discus are no where near as stellar, Flint says it has helped him do better in the shot. The shot and discus work well together because they both create yj; v ; t " 1 'i records.
