Show I 1 Page 6B, Lakeside Review, June 10, 1981 'Name Brand' Plants Ga i ning Popularity Each year more and more home gardeners ask for their greenhouse-grow- n vegetable transplants by name. This switch to name-brangardening is the result of a 20th century milestone in plant science,' the development of the hybrid. Each of these wonder vegetables holds a ounty of scientifically programmed advantages in its green genes. Although vegetables have been garden-grow- n since man first put down roots of his own, circumstance has often determined successful harvests. Every species of vegetable comes with its own set of requirements and problems. All are vulnerable to a range of diseases. Each species has its own requirements for temperature range, light, fertility and moisture. d, When plant breeders first began the painstaking process which produces hybrids, they sought superior vegetables which would remain healthy and productive throughout the garden season. They looked to sturdy strains which would produce higher yields under a variety of conditions. Todays hybrid vegetables emerge as true thoroughbreds, Births May 27, 1981 to Howard Bryan Boy MRS. This is often accomplished by hand. Both the male and female parent have been bred for superior but distinct qualities. Their offspring, the hybrid, must carry a combination of these virtues within its tiny seed. Once produced, the hybrid must then pass a rigorous evaluation; of its superiority in various settings. Before a hybrid is introduced, its germinated seed has been greenhouse tested, garden tested, and taste tested in a variety of locations. In the field it has been subject to the vagaries of natures own season. The 1980 trial gardens of the Ball Seed Company included visual comparisons of hybrid vegetables with side by side plantings of older nonhybrid varieties. Yield and vigor were carefully evaluated throughout the growing season. They devour the blood or tissue of their host but contribute nothing in return. Some examples of parasites are worms, ticks, fleas and lice. In case of the cat we break the parasites down into two groups; ec- (external) toparasites and . I would first (internal). like to discuss some of the external parasites. These are parasites that live on and in the skin of the cat. The two most common feline ectoparasites seen in this area are ring worm and ear mites. Mites belong to the same family as ticks but are much smaller than ticks and most are only seen with the aid of a magnifying lense or microscope. Ear mites complete their whole life cycle in the cats ear. Their presence is farily easy to detect by the block debris inside the cats ear and the constant scratching of the ears by the cat. Normally, the cats ear canal is composed of hairless skin with no wax or other debris in the canal. If there is a lot of debris in the ears the cat will need to be anesthetized so that the ear canals can be cleaned and treated. The owner will then be instructed on follow up treatment to rid the cat of this most annoying parasite. It. is my preferance to have the owners continue the cleaning process twice a week with a special cleansing solution and to use a drop of Tresader. (merck) in each ear daily. The cat picks up this parasite by being in contact with another animal ' that has it. Just a word of caution; the tissues of the ear canal are very sensitive and great care should be used in whatk preparations are used in the ear. Some medications intended for the use against ticks and mites can be very caustic and irritating if used in the earw and you end up with a cat that has a more severe problem than that causedj . by the ear mites. I would like to write about ring wormk' in the cat in my next article. 773-497- 7 Original owner of Pat's Pet Chalet Good for $2 off grooming thru June MMMMMioupon FREE QUARTZ TRAVEL ALARM CLOCK JUST COME IN AND REGISTER 10 THRU 13 OF JUNE J 1 Your Complete Time service Center .
