Show 2C Lakeside Review, Wednesday, Oct, 28, 1981 Royals to Take on Huskies Sky By BUSS FULLMER Review Correspondent SMITHFIELD Sky View and Roy mixed it up in football Friday at Smithfield, and when the dust had settled, the scoreboard showed the Bob Cats on top The game was for second place in Region One, but there was more at stake than the runner-u- p position. By winning, Sky View gets the home-fiel- d advantage against the number three team out of Region Two in a play-of- f for a berth in the finals. Utah State Roy finished third in the Region One and must travel to Hillcrest Friday to play the Huskies who finished second in their region. Turnovers hurt the Royals. They were intercepted five times by an alert Bob Cat defense. Two of those turnovers led directly to Sky View touchdowns. Sky View scored first on a 36 yard field goal in the first quarter and took a 0 lead at the halftime pause. Roy missed a second quarter chip-shfrom inside the 30 yard line, but got out front on a touchdown by Gary Ashley and Aitan Kahana booted the extra point. The Royals still had the lead, and the ball in the fourth quarter, but lost it on an interception on their own 35 yardline. Sky View punched in from five yards out to get back in front. Later, after another turnover, the Cats scored again on a 25 yard pass from Lindley to Burton. The Royals were not dead yet. They recovered a fumble on the Bob Cat line. Wade Jacklin hit Lance Jorgenson from the five for a TD and then hit Ben Tafoya for the conversion. Roy then tried an kick but couldnt get the ball. The Royals were still in contention, but Sky View picked off a Jacklin pass to end the game. They played great defense, said Roy Coach Ernie Jacklin. That Jodie Esplin has got to be the best linebacker weve faced all season. We came up with our lowest output of yardage this year. We didnt play too badly, said Jacklin. We only had 39 rushes, but totaled 142 yards on the ground and Wade completed 15 of 25 passes for 104 yards. Eric (Aaragon) carried 14 times for 87 yards. So Roy finished third in Region One, after being picked to take first place at the beginning of the season. The Royals still have a chance to play for the state title, but must get past Hillcrest Friday, and then number-on- e rated Granite (again) the following week, and if all that should happen, they will play for the Utah State title. What should have been a happy occasion for the Leopards at their 66th annual homecoming turned out to be a very close 4 loss to the Vikings. With this win, the Vikings keep alive the prospects for a play-of- f berth. They seem to be getting by their opponents by the hair of their chins. But a win is a win no matter how close it is. 16-1- post-sea-so- n Viewmonts win over the Leopards was an important one for the Vikings. Viewmont came out early and, thanks to the running of Jeff Porter and the small but quick offensive line, were able to take an early lead in the game. With only 6:44 left in the first quarter, the Vikings swept right and with a little help Porter carried the ball 50 yards for the fjrst score. On the next set of downs a short pass of 30 yards to Porter again lead. The gaVe the Vikings a IPAT attempt was blocked by a 13-- 0 out to show the other exactly what football was all about. The battle went back and forth until a third quarter interception by Viking Ted Jones (Jones and Scott Hubbard shared three between them), to set up a Viking field goal which made the score By this time East, who had a 4 region record, decided that things needed to change so they razzle-- ' dazzled everyone with one of the oldest plays in football history the flea flicker.
