Layton started the game by going to their man to man defense with the middle sagging inside to help as she crossed. The strategy worked for the first quarter, as Layton pulled away to a seven point lead. In the second quarter Roy went to a sagging man defense which resembles a 2 zone and this held Layton to just eight points in the quarter. This de3-- fense also allowed Roy to control the boards, which in turn allowed them to outscore the Lancers by 11 points. Playing an excellent game for the Royals was Liz Whale Although she only scored four points in the game, it was her strong defense that kept Roy in the game. She has a great court sense. She cuts the passing lanes really well and is very unselfish, always ready to give the ball off to someone else to shoot the ball, said Raydene Jonhson, head coach of the Royals. When the second half started, Layton had a new angle. They over loaded one side and allowed Angie Gibby to go one on one with Nikki Nye to try and draw the foul or get the back door with Nikki having to come up high to stop Gibbys fine outside shot. This worked fine for the Lancers with Kim Myers on the receiving end of most of the back door passes.
