Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday September 19, 2000 Humanitarian vacation is a mission of love 9B obituaries 4 JACKIE ANDERSON Special to the Progress ing no Spanish, to arrive whore By Virginia Wlioelors vacation photos ure the stuff from whirl) dreams are made. Blue ocean, sandy beaches, palm trees and vibrantly colored flowers bathed in sunlight invoke images of relaxation and fun. But turn the page and squalor, poverty and desperation greet the eye with the truth about this unique woman and her choice of vacation. Wheeler recently completed her fourth medical mission to Honduras as a representative of her Church of Christ faith and the Baxter Institute. Wheeler is a family nurse practitioner and the nuxiictd director for the Carbon Medical Clinic in East Carbon. The local humanitarian first traveled to Cholutecha in December of 1098, just one month after hurricane Mitch visited its devastation on the small country of I ionduras. In a three day period, Honduras was pounded with 55 inches of rain, said Wheeler. In the hardest hit providence of Cholutecha entire parts of the city were washed away. 1,300 people lost their lives. Wheeler traveled alone, speak con- ditions surpassed anything she might have imagined. Five- - hundred refugees were gathered in one church. In a buildingwith nothing more than a dirt floor, Wheeler hung a rummaged hammock for an examination table. She brought a light bulb from the church, and her medical clinic was complete. The flood waters had dried up by the time Wheeler arrived in I londu-ra- s, leaving contaminated soil and little available clean drinking water. The people had to travel miles by foot to obtain water that must then be carried by hand back to families. Wheeler treated people for skin infections, bronchial conditions, parasites and malnutrition in her makeshift clinic, as well as travel-ingi- n the back of a truck three days a week to nearby villages . She quickly ran out of medical supplies, and though she had money from nationwide church donations, she had to go to the city daily to beg for supplies, nonetheless. When Wheeler returned to Cholutecha in July of this year it was to an established clinic with a cement floor and a real examination table, thanks to that first humani tarian effort by people from throughout the world. She was accompanied on her mission by Donna Mathis, a family nurse practitioner from Perron, as well as Hi members of the Church of Christ from across the nation. The group helped build school buildings and churches in New Cholutecha while Wheeler and Mathis attended to the peoples medical needs. The two women were again armed with medical supplies, three suitcases each, donated by Castle Valley health providers. Other local businesses assisted in the effort by donating breakfast bars and Raman noodles. Wheeler explained that they were lodged by a family who spoke no English, but who opened their home to strangers as a way of contributing to their cause. For one month the women ate a small helping of beans and a tortilla each day. The breakfast bars and noodles were a treat that the women shared with the native people. The womens day began at sun up and ended at sun down, and that is a much longer day there than it is here, pointed out Wheeler. Half of each day was sjx'nt treating patients THE SEVENTH JUDICIAL DISTRICT COURT IN IN AND FOR EMERY COUNTY, STATE OF UTAH THE STATE OF UTAH, In the clinic, and half of each day the women spent traveling in the back of a truck to outlyingvillages. "There w ere people who had not received tuiy medicid attention since I saw them on my last visit; people with serious conditions like diabe- said tes and hypertension, Wheeler. She displayed a photograph of one such man. His lower leg festered with an oen sore of his untreated diabetes. Next summer Wheeler will vacation on the Mosquito Coast of where locals travel as many as three days in a dugout canoe to receive medicid treatment. That, said Wheeler, is an entirely different story." syni-tomnt- 1 ion-dur- ic as BUNDERSON Monument & Vault DISPLAY ON MAIN ST. Castle Dale 381-519- or 2 381-237- 9 BERNIET.
