The oversized ramp was constructed to accommodate the 7,000 boaters who run Desola- tion Canyon and the 20,000 plus day runners each year. For the Desolation runners there is a large amount of gear needed for the seven day trip that takes space on the ramp to unload and then load in trucks. John Lewis, BLM Civil Engineer in Moab explained that they poured 230 cubic yards of concrete. BLM crews did most of the work to keep the project in the expected $00,000 budget. The state parks boating program also provided labor and other assistance with the construction. The dog restroom was the brainstorm of park employees who grew wean.' of cleaning up after the visitors; after all, doggie relief piles sure don't help the lawns grow. Park staff got together for a brainstorming session and the restroom plans were bom. Ingenuity, inventiveness, and a resourceful use of existingand donated materials made the endeavor an enjoyable experience for all those in- four-legg- ed volved. The restroom is centrally located so that campers and their pets can access the futility with just a short walk from their campingsite. The foundiition of small pea gravel, donated by I tah State Transp irtatiim. was chosen because it is easy to clean and replace. The three-fofence surrounding the 40 foot by SO ot German shepherd let her owner know she preferred the fence because she felt safe and seeure...good dog. The red fire hydrant, donated by Perron City Public Works, adds a whimsical touch to the restroom; owners smile and dogs line up to leave their personal autograph on the hydrant, just to say theyve boon there. As isitors enter the park, they slow down to get a good look at the innov ative restroom, and its no wonder, the facility is a pioneer in the state of Ctah and Millsite is proud to be the first in the field. 1 believe our new dog restroom is a great interpretive and educational tool," said Cody Patton, assistant manager for Millsite. The park has always had a problem with dogwaste and this new installation give us a physical item that is recognizable. According to Dennis Willis, BLM in Price, the 7,000 people who are permitted to run Desolation Canyon are split evenly between private individual river runners and professional runs. They estimate another 20.000 people run the Green River daily run which includes seven rapids over an eight mile stretch of the Green River north of the ramp.
