People are not aware of the hidden dangers for pets that go along with holiday festivities, said Funda Alp, director of communications for the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association (APPMA). But, there are steps people can take to minimize potential hazards to keep their pets safe during this joyous season. Here are some tips from the experts at APPMA to protect your pet during this holiday season: Dont Take Chances with Ornaments & Branches-Plac- e small and fragile ornaments high up on your tree. Make sure ribbons, tinsel and garland are out of your pets reach since they can get caught in your pets throat. Also, make sure your pet doesnt chew on branches or eat fallen needles. Fresh tree branches smell great but can be toxic to your pet. Dont Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly-o- r mistletoe, poinsettias, lilies, azaleas, amaryllis or cyclamen. While these plants add a nice touch to your holiday decor, they can be poisonous. Use artificial plants made from silk or plastic instead. Some Sweets Aren't Treats Chocolates and other candy can cause your pet severe stomach pains or even a fatal reaction. Place goodies out of the reach of a puppys paws, a kittys claws and a gerbils (J jaws. Batteries Not Included-Kee- p loose batteries or packages containing batteries away from -- .
