Show 2001 Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday January 23. 9A PORTS Emery basketball teams win big By RYAN PEACOCK Sports Reporter Both Emerys basketball teams won region games this week, keeping them at or near the top of the region standings. The Lady Spartans beat North 1 Sanpete in Mount Pleasant Thursday to boost their overall record to 10-- 4 and to remain undefeated in region play at Both teams got off to slow starts and Emery trailed 5 at the end of the first quarter. But the second quarter was another story. The Lady Spartans outscored the Lady Hawks 18-- 8 in the quarter. After that, the Emery defense shut down North Sanpete to pull out the 1 41-3- 4-- 0. 7-- 41-3- win. Cheryl Grant led the Spartans in scoringwith 17 points, followed by Tara Powells 11, Shannah Oviatts JUNIOR JAZZ STANDINGS 3rd and 4th Grade Girls nine and Christin Botts four. The boys team coasted to an even bigger blowout of North Sanpete Friday night. The Spartans clobbered the winless Hawks Emery led from the start and never let the Hawks get a breath. Emery led 2 at halftime and 6 at the end of the third quarter. Freshman Bowie Jeffs shot for a 83-5- 1. 39-2- 60-3- 25 points, while Steven Ewell hit for 19, Klint Anderson career-hig- h scored 14, and six other Spartans also scored. The win put Emerys record at 1 in region, with their only loss coming last week to Delta. This week. Richfield Friday. STANDINGS FISHING REPORTING Anglers, remember to pick up a new fishing license and 2001 Fishing Proclamation. Please be cautious on the ice. Electric Lake.
