Show Emery County Progress Castle Dale, Utah Tuesday October 9, 2001 1 OPINION LETTERS fctteftirim-JJdgt- T Ofifi nmo Where Else But America? Where else but in America, the land of freedom of speech. Open mouth, insert foot, and truly we have all done this, many times to our disbelief. It is human nature to act or react to givens. But, sometimes we overreact, which is our right to do so. Ive always been a take charge type of person, but on that fateful September morn when my son called a little after 7 a.m.., and said to turn on the news quick, I lost my self control. I could not function for days. The horror which clawed at my sight and senses tore my soul. The sorrow of that sight could only be summed up to one phrase. The questions children, wives and husbands would be asking if they could get the dreaded words to form. The cowardly act of war on our worlds existence did not leave these people time to act or react. Their world just collapsed in a matter of seconds and minutes. Ours lasted, as war does, much, much longer. My most heartfelt thought was for the children whose parents would not be coming home that night. At times like these, wre mostly come together and stand united, held each other, if not physically, in our hearts and prayers. But since it is America and we do have the freedom of speech, there are those who can not refrain from exercising that right, even in times of pain and anguish. Though it appears that they have developed a severe case of the stupids. Even though we have this right, Id like to believe that most would put on the brakes, before inserting said foot up to the knee. A knee jerk reaction for those who seem to have a flair for words can be a real case of the daily or nightly case of the stupids and can come at a great cost. Fbrget those words that struck disbelief in you, for they (the speakers) are struck with themselves and an importance that they need. Singyour songs, sow your words carefully, so as not to hurt one another. Ffeel your emotions and sorrows and let them go to rest. Speak softly to yourselves and your children or your elders, for you never know from whence your sound may come to an end. Freedom only exists, because we have learned to appreciate it. But it has come costly to America. Yet we have learned to coexist. We may not like what has been said and disapprove of how it was said, nor the insensitivity of it, but we do not deny them the right to express their views. This was a scene the media could not put a spin on. Cameras were rolling and it was documented, uncut, unedited and so very real. All of the movies made in our time could not equal the real thing happening right in front of our eyes. You could not stand to look, and yet you had to. Pure utter disbelief had us tightly in its grip. I believe our sense of freedom and prosperity are a threat to many. But to strike out at the very hand that helps feed, clothe, send medical supplies, help with the save the children programs is unreal. A hate has been festering so long, that they really believe against them. This America of ours stands as a land of freedom, because weve always held our arms and shores open to the helpless and hopeless. America is a dream land to millions and will always be. Who can deny a sincere desire to make a better life for themselves. The horror we witnessed that day was created by young men who expressed a desire to learn to fly planes. They were given visas, we trained them and trusted that the desires they expressed were real. Always we welcome, but now we know that there were signs there, that we shouldnt have. We trust that the desires of the masses to have the freedom to speak and work and even pray without the fear of death or worse. All they wanted was a chance to learn a trade and carve out a better life for themselves in this our America. They are willing to walk through whatever it takes for a better life. But, sadly there are those who also want to destroy that freedom. And they did that Sept 11, 2001 for so many. F.S. Davis Orangeville Thoughts on the Pledge It was so long when I was young, and with so little importance. Standingthere, repeating ev- ery morning, something they made you memorize. But now without any question, amount of boredom, or youthful ignorance, I do pledge my allegiance to my flag, and everything in which it stands. Something in which I used to take for granted on a daily basis. When it is taught to you as a script because you are too young to understand the truthful power it carries, you think only about having to stand up from the chair you are sitting in. Back then it seemed as if it took two hours to complete the pledge of allegiance, but now it doesnt seem long enough to do our amazing country justice. God Bless America.
