The service learning class is under the direction of Jonnie Johansen. Each quarter different service projects have been accomplished. Some of these include honoring and learning about Veterans, making Olympic blankets, presenting two programs atTurnquist Retreat in Elmo and the Emery County Care and Rehab Center in Perron, making Valentines and holiday treats for the nursing home, presenting readers theaters for the elementary students, projects for pre- schoolers, and preparing projects for the Castle Valley Center in Price, and also mak ing quilts for humanitarian service. The students develop a close relationship and skills as they work with children of all ages and the elderly. They gain an appreciation of other people, said Johansen. Character values and skills are taught and developed as the student plans, prepares, accomplishes, evaluates, and celebrates their ser- vice. The goal is to engage the students in service as they integrate their learning into subject-mattcurricula, experience career possibilities, and use problem er solving skills to understand problems and improve school and community environment. Parents, speakers, and other adults are brought in to improve help in skill development. On April 13, Mrs. Wilstead will teach students cake decorat- ing skills.
