TYI A Lady Pirates Take Fifth in State lourney Gh'een River Volleyball Rachel Dunham Green River High Reporter By lle ball team The Lady Pirate's has done cry w ell and ended their season w ith a record of 20 wins and seven losses. At the region tournament the girls played Duchesne and Whitehorse, both for the third time. They won both matches. It was a hard fight but the Pirate's toughness and their desire to w in carried them through. The enthusiastic crowd of Pirate fans helped keep their team going and were the loud- - est crowd at the tournament to the dismay of their opponents. The Pirates ended up playing the Rich Rebels for the region championship and lost after a very tough match. Despite taking second place, everyone was excited for the chance to play in the state tournament the next week, because this was the first time in several years the Lady Pirate's voile ball team made it to state. The Pirates played Bry ce alley the first match and won 15--1 and 15-Later that afternoon the Iirates played the Altamont Longhorns. They lost the 4. team finishes the season successfully first set 5 after a tough fight but came back and w on the second set The third set was an extremely hard fought game. The two teams were tied at 13 and the suspense and tension could be felt on and around the court. The Pirates knew they could do it because they had done it before, but what if they didnt? These thoughts and questions were in everyones minds. Tired and tense, time seemed to drag and life seemed to be in slow motion for the girls on the floor. The Longhorns managed to get one more point and the Pirates knew they 12-1- 17-1- 5. had to give it their all. Each time there was a side out the lady's hopes w ould rise but then something would go wrong and it was buckle down, break the serve, and get the ball back to them. Finally Altamont got 15 and won the match 13-1- 5 after an agonizing game for the Lady Pirates. It w as a huge disappointment for them and their fans but the girls came back the next day with a winningattitude and won their match with Navajo Mountain 15-- 7 and 15-1- 0. They beat Whitehorse 1 and later that afternoon then their sea 15-- 1 15-1- 0 son was over. The friendships and memories of a great season w ill never be forgotten by the team Their "never say die" attitude and their ability to work together and encourage each other helped them win their games along w ith a good deal of talent and hard work. They finished 5th in the state and in a small way brought the excitement of volleyball back to Green River High School by working together as a team They endiKl the season by makingit farther than any team in quite a few years has and much farther than their riv als exjjected. net.
