He had some tough decisions to make, just as all coaches do. 'Those trying out came in and made my job very tough," he said in an interview at the end of tryouts week. "They worked hard and played hard. had to make some hard decisions." But making cuts comes with the job, and in the end he came up with a team that he thinks will do well in the 1A divisions Region 18 this year, and very well could carry the school to another state appearance. "It looks as if my starters will be the core of seniors we have, but that fifth position is still up for grabs, he stated. The four seniors that will return included Joyce Clark, Misty Valdez, Brittnie Leonard and Chelsey Timothy. The list sounds like a whos who of the volleyball team that went to state earlier this fall. I "We also have some good juniors and some very good sophomores, said Hepworth. Junior players will include Nickole Larson, Rouie Lowe and Michelle Liedal. The sophomores, some of which will be used on the varsity are Amanda Hepworth, Samatha Madrid, Donna Turner, Ashley Leyba and Janet Lowe. Hepworth expects the team to be in the top three in Region 18 for sure and probably in the top two. He rates Dugway as the team to beat this year in the region. "They are always good, even in years when they lose key players, he says. "West Desert will be scrappy, but they lost a couple of key seniors, so think we will be right there. Hepworth will be assisted by Kale Peacock as his assistant coach. Region 18 has a reputation of producing tough schools through the regular season, but falling down a little in the state playoffs. They also have a school that competes that has one of the worst losing records in state girls basketball history; Meridian. The Lady Mongooses have won only one game in three years. Other teams in the region include Tintic, who usually fields a good team, Wasatch Academy from Sanpete County and Wendover, another school that is almost always a factor in the league I race. East Carbon had a large number of girls try out for the varsity and it was tough whittling down the list. But Hepworth is encouraged by so many wanting to play basketball for the school. Its the sign of a winning program. Chelsey Timothy was a dominant force for East Carbon last year and will return this season to assist the Lady Vikings in their quest for a state 1A championship. al( ottA $ocalr tdTeamA' fat they cBebt' fylfishcfr 2002-200- PeaAotv 3 Lifetime Guaranteed Parts Miner's Trading Post & Sunny Bowl in Sunnyside MCE TEIAOING CO.
