Show Davis Records Fall SECTION I What a fall! Fourteen records were broken in both the girls and boys division at last weeks Davis District Track and Field Meet. The meet also included a dazzling finish by Clearfields Ricky Smith (right) who came from way back to win the mile relay for his fellow Falcons. Men And Women Win Davis District Another Feather In Falcons Can! By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Some In a simple sentence, it's safe to say. that track and field is booming in Davis County. The Top Women In State Compete THE 1984 Davis District Meet held at Clearfield High was one more substantiated reason why it is. At the gathering at Clearfield last Wednesday and Thursday, seven new records were established on the boys side while one other was tied. And with the women, there were seven new records established also. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports With Weber High no where around, the Clearfield womens track and field team finally posted their first invitational track win of THATS quite a tribute to the 14 new records in two days and one other tied. Spring's big sport isn't only strong at Clearfield where John Flint has masterfully put together a respected program, but Viewmont has continually remained a state contender as well. Then in the past couple of years, its been Layton and Davis getting stronger. booming growth. FLINT, LYNN Dubois. Russ Jones and Mike Shaw love this sport, nearly as much as they love their own families. And because of that respect and devotion to the sport, Davis County fields some of the elite clubs in the state. And no wonder, when they finally get together in their own little competition, they and their kids treat it as if it were a state championship up for grabs. Third Titie At Home I CLEARFIELD - For the third fime in four years, the Falcons have won the Davis District event. Though it's not admitted outloud. John Flint and his kids probably treasured the victory as much as any of the major invitationals rfieyve won this year. Perhaps the reason for that is Clearfield's pride in being the best in a county that is super strong in track. The Vikings bested Clearfield last year and Flint's crew were fairly relieved to get the title back. ::BUT EVEN though Clearfield won by a 27 point margin over Viewmont (163 to 136), it was much, much closer than that. It 's was a familiar site to find the Flint with his arms folded and one hand propping his chin (a look of worry and fret) as View-njocontinually performed much Fal-cbn- nt bitter than expected. Clearfield's superb talent helped bring in the trophy, but with all considered it was the Falcon's depth that helped ice the win. TAKE FOR instance the mile run where Viewmont is loaded with good distance runners. Todd Davis, Clearfield's distance ace, said he wasn't going to let the Vikand he did just ings finish one-tw- o that by slipping in between Mike Allen and Reese Kidman to take second in the mile run. "Coach t$ld me to split them up and I did ip," said Davis who is a junior who Iras already qualified for state in that event. ; And wffile Davis was doing his assigned task, so was Glen Coy Who finished fifth in both the mile and the 800 meters, adding just a few more valuable points. : DAVIS WAS also third two-mil- in the run and even though he e couldn't split Allen and Kidman there, the Falcons had Kelly Briggs ajid Todd Denman finish fourth afid sixth respectively in that race. : And when you talk about depth, don't start anywhere but the 400 meters when talking about Clear- field. Ricky Smith captured first With a time of 50.09 which set a new meet record, Don Gladfelter took second and Doug Evans was fifth. That," said Viewmonts Dubois, Was the meet right there. It give Clearfield 20 points to View-nion- ts 0. BEEN running since sftventh grade but Id never run the 400 meters until this year," said IVE 1984. THE CLEARFIELD gals have had trouble with the Warriors in major events, and even though Davis High's effort was galiant, the Lady Falcons won the 1984 Davis District Track and Field Meet with 148 points, 30 more points than Davis who finished second with 118. Viewmont was third with 98, Layton fourth with 52, Woods Laytons Terry Kealamakia set a new Davis District record in the 300 meter hurdles. Gladfelter, a sophomore, Davis Jeff Singley was second in both the high and low hurdles. Ive usually run the 800 meters but my 400 efforts have been the most fun. Win Of Gladfelter, Smith, Evans and Rodney Ryubal also gave Clearfield a first place in the mile relay as Smith put on a spectacular effort in the final leg to Davis and Layton. out-distan- DUANE ROCK had things under control in the 800 meters until the meets Outstanding Athlete, Mike Allen, caught him in the straightaway to win that race. But Rock continues to be consistent, also coming in and giving his club more valuable points. As mentioned. Coy, finished fifth in the 800 meters and also in the mile. He stated, I feel good. I got my best times and Im hoping to qualify for state in the mile this week. Darts Happy With Second - KAYSVILLE Mike Shaw and his Davis Darts had to be flying back to Kaysville, rather than driving in a bus, after finishing third in the fourth annual Davis District Track and Field meet. IT WAS one of the brightest moments of the year and perhaps the past couple of years as Davis points to edge out Layton for third place behind Clearfield and Viewmont. Of course the event that boosted the Darts into the third place slot was their fabulous showing in the mile relay, the final event of the y track meet. The Darts went out like gangbusters in that event, especially with Todd Andersons opening leg that gave the Darts the lead. finished with 105 two-da- CRAIG CARTER, the shot put whiz, captured first in the shot with his best throw ever, a measure of 55 feet and 5Vi inches. Kim Thur-goo- d was third there and Vaun Waite finished sixth. Its my technique Ive got to work on, said Carter who has hit 57 feet in warm-up- s at major invitationals. I THINK I can beat (Chad) Law state. 1 get more psyched up when hes around and he gets more psyched up when Im around too. EVEN THOUGH Clearfields Ricky Smith put on a spectacular showing in the final leg to give Clearfield the win, the Darts managed to hold on to second while the Layton team finished third. Those extra two points gave the Darts their third place final. Davis Jeff Ohlwiler and Erik Thompson continue to glide and both won their respective events last week. Ohlwiler took the javelin with a toss of 186-two feet better than the winning mark he set to win a few weeks back at Weber State. Thompson set a new meet record of 157-- 1 Vi in the discus, a throw which beat the old record of set by Rich Ipaktchian of Layton back in 1981. 6, 156-4'- A JAMES MOORE won the pole vault event with a leap of which tied the meet record in that event. Bodily finished fifth and Ferguson was sixth. Clearfields Jeff Parry had a long jump of 2 feet 2 inches and a half, his best of the year. But it wasn't enough to take first as Layton's Tom Kidd took care of that. 13-- 6 1 STERLING ALLEN had a javethrow of 162-- 9 which netted him fourth in that event. Hal Schofield cleared 6--2 in the high jump and took first place. His attempts came on Thursday in wet lin and rainy conditions which accounts for the poor results. Todd Walker took third and Brian Fryer was sixth. RICKY SMITH, besides taking first in the mile relay and 400 meters, was also second in both the 100 and 200 meters. Larry Johnson finished fifth for the Falcons in the 10 high hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. 1 The meets Outstanding Athletes Viewmonts Mike Allen nd Clearfields Stephanie Clements. My dad (Don Thompson) actually saw the throw that went over 159 feet which is the school record, said Erik. I believe I can go that far, maybe even 160. Todd Anderson had his best day in a Dart uniform, performing well in the mile relay, sprint relay and the 200 meters where he took sixth. OTHER DARTS who looked imy meet pressive during the were Jeff Singley who took second in the 10 high hurdles with an impressive time of 15.07. Jeff on Wednesday had set a new meet record in the 300 meter hurdles but had it broke the next day by Laytons Kealamakia who beat him for the first time ever to win that race. Mark Gunty took third for the Darts in the 400 meters, Kenny Robbins was third in the 800 meters and Chris Hess was fourth in the 800. Joe Hawkins took fourth in the mile run and Matt Kimball was sixth in the 1600 meters. two-da- 1 What makes it tough to beat him, is his long strides, which are a lot longer than mine. KEALAMAKIA, who didn't even think of track during the summer, came out strong during the winter indoor track schedule and hasnt let up since. This years showing is a light year ahead of last year as a sophomore when he didnt score one point for his team. My goal is to beat (Larry) Helms in the 300 meters, said Terry, With a lot of hard work, I think I can do it. TOM KIDD placed third in the 300 meter hurdles and Darryl Martin was fourth. That event gave the Lancers 20 points, without ques- tion their biggest point getting event of the day. Martin, who finished with a time of 41.95 had his best time of the year and says he is looking forward to the future after his performance Thurdsay. Martin was also fourth in the THE DARTS had good representation in the high jump as Morgan Nelson took second, Singley took fourth and Greg Williard was fifth. In the relays, Davis took second in the mile, was fourth in the sprint relay and was also fourth in the medley. Kealamakia Sets Record LAYTON - I was the pits last year, said Laytons Terry Kealamakia, But this year 1 want it a whole lot more." -- 1 10 highs. But were not only happy with Jeffs javelin achievements, he also had his best times ever in the 400 and 200 meters. The kid just works hard and no one wants to win more than he does. y OHLWILER finished the event by taking fourth in the 400 meters and fifth .in the 200 meters. That went along with his impressive javelin win. Thompson, meanwhile, continued his torrid pace in the discus by busting it with a throw over 157 feet. Again, as in the Weber State meet, it was his first throw that did two-da- ABOUT KEALAMAKIA, Jones offered, Hes a super kid, both in school and out of it. His GPA is about 3.6 and you can see what he does on the track. About the only thing that Terry lacks is confidence. Things like today will undoubtedly give him Its coming. HE WORKS his tail off and as long as he does that, hell continue to get better. I was glad he broke the 40 second barrier because hed been above it four or five times in a row.
