When a persons head snaps back and the lower jaw being on hinge comes up against the upper jaw, it hits with tremendous force causing several concusions according to the Kaysville dentist. Last spring at Westminister College in Salt Lake, two Davis Dart soccer players suffered concusion and wicked cuts in and around the mouth. Not the greatest subject to write about, but according to a local dentist who enjoys athletics, he feels these injuries could have been avoided. , DR. STEPHEN Morgan, who is part of the dental community in Kaysville, says hes seen a lot of dental injuries over the years, that might affect a persons appearance or speech the rest of their lives. . Because of a genuine interest in the prevention of these kind of injuries, Morgan jumped on a plane earlier this summer and attended w hat he described as one of the most rewarding seminars Ive ever been to. THE SEMINAR was conducted in San Antonio, Tex. and was hosted by the University of Texas dental school and in conjunction with the University of Michigan dental school. Being a dentist from a small community like Kaysville was quite overwhelming when compared to the distinguished people who were arriving from all parts of the country and world. We had representatives from the University of Texas athletic staff, Michigans staff as well as other universities like Alabama, Georgia and UCLA. The team dentists from the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, New York Knickerbockers and others were in attendance. BUT IT really opened my eyes to what we as dentists can do to help prevent injuries. Our main objective is to sell the people on it by first making them aware of the problem and second to show them how injuries can be prevented, said Morgan. Dr. Morgan reeled off some statistics made ready through studies that were presented at the seminar. He stated that since the year 1962 - examination. Prior to 62 over 50 percent of football injuries were in the mouth. HE BROUGHT attention to the study made in Canada from 1974 to 1982 where in all sports, the number one sport that created the most injuries to the mouth was hockey which isnt surprising. But what is surprising is that soccer ranked number two while basketball and football were down the list. The head trainer at the University of Michigan said that two areas where mouth injuries occur the most in America are in recreational soccer and in high school and college captured the state title and qualified 14 athletes for the National championships to be held this week in Durham, North Carolina. At the last count, Morgan said there were 500 more applicants. Ive been around athletics and soccer for quite a while and fortunately there havent been a lot of real serious injuries. This is exactly what is done in Canada before high school age kids can participate in sports. Another interesting facet of the mouthguard are facts brought out by the University of Indianas NCAA championship soccer team and several UCLA scientists and athletic trainers. THE KEY is for the young kids to wear them in any kind of collision sport, starting at a So when the very young age, said Morgan, is the school mouthpiece age, athlete gets high as natural as anything he puts on to perform with. More study has gone into making mouthpieces so certain members of a team can speak, like a middle linebacker signal caller in football. The Cowboys have taken out plays that used to use the signals with two ths in them, like 66. These are difficult to like 33 or with mouthpieces. pronounce I Clfd. Rec. Though its easy and these kind of pieces can cost only $3 or $4, Dr. Morgan encourages parents to supervise in the boiling and biting of these pieces. From Texas, Dr. Morgan learned the world of custom-mad- e mouthguards and claims he now makes pieces for all of his children that participate in sports. Ill not allow any of my kids to play in collision sports without a mouthguard, especially after what Ive learned, he said. THOUGH THE power guard ideas havent been proven entirely accurate, the Russians claim theyll use these pieces in the 1984 Olympics for if nothing more, just the confidence factor alone. Marathon runners are beginning now to wear mouthpieces that are worn on their lower jaw which claims here say it creates less neck, and upper back pain, because the jaw is placed in a certain position that is more comfortable.
