Show 1, 1UU Ufa Twmhg A New Led Brian Taylor not only one excited about BYU Cougars basketball future. KEITH By DUNCAN Journal Sports - KAYSVILLE Players and coaches have been known to turn a new leaf, and according to BYUs Brian Taylor, so can an entire collegiate basketball program. AS TAYLOR was in his home town of Kays-vill- e last week, splitting some time playing golf and continuing a serious conditioning schedule, he had some time to talk about off-seas- his future as a major college basketball player. Everyone is excited for the new beginning, began Taylor, I honestly believe therell be some new excitement thatll help us out and carry the team at the start of the new season. But despite the competitiveness, there is some pretty good brotherhood between everyone. aerobics after he gets off. I want to be as good as I can possibly be at the first of the year, said Taylor. Another is having the rookie year out of the way. I felt pretty good being out there my freshman year, but I know Ill walk on the court this winter feeling more like a veteran. Its just having more confidence that I can play with anyone, said Taylor. ON THE road trips, we roomed w ith someone different every time and we usually ended up chumming around with that roommate. I dont think youll find that at some other schools. Once a room assignment is made, guys usually dont roam around with anyone but the same 'old friends. The good feelings between Brian and his teammates certainly had a little to do with his It eventual working into the starting line-uwas the first game Brian started in, the road game in San Diego, that he scored 17 points including the winning basket. TAYLOR, when he made the decision to attend BYU, figured making the best of what a four-yebasketscholarship and a ball program could offer him. The former Davis High standout simply believes the bottom line is hard work is going to pay big dividends from here on out. d The 4 guard who started in the Cougar's final seven games, is still figuring on an mission for the LDS Church. In fact thats something hes had in mind from high school on. MAYBE AFTER the upcoming season is over, it might be a good time to leave. Im going on a mission sometime, but I want to play this year with Durrant and (Bret) Applegate. Ive still got a lot to learn from them. Devin has counseled me to go and says its a great thing. But hes also said that a person must do it when theyre ready. Devin knew what he was doing when he left on his, in fact enough that hell probably go as a first round draft choice in next summers NBA draft, Taylor continued. ar top-not- multi-talente- 6-- ITS HARD to describe going from a starter in high school to a sub in college. A lot of people go through it and I had a hard time adjusting. Once I made the starting team, it seemed like an easier flow to play, said Taylor. As far as school went, Brian admitted it was as tough as people predicted it woulf be. 1 heard it was tough, but once you apply yourself, youll do alright, he said. th THE FANS will be coming out to see what a new coach has up his sleeve and we as players are excited all the way. Itll be a big boom to us. The new beginning Taylor talks about has everything to do with the exit of Frank Arnold as BYUs head coach, whose position was inherited by LaDell Anderson. LADELL IS a nice guy. In the few times visited with him in his office and in the team meetings, weve learned he loves to work hard. And speaking for the players, we want to work hard for him as well as for all the coaches. Devin (Durrant) gave me his opinion that LaDell is the kind of coach who wont keep a guy from doing the things ne can do best, stated Brian. So its true that a new coach can add some excitement, but Taylor is getting personally excited about the new year for more reasons than that. You could start with the heavy committment that hes made to be in top condition once basketball camp begins in the fall. He works in Provo through the week, but finds time to do some running, shooting and nifty Ive I evt& r ysX ' "4 4!ki K s'ti. 7. BYUs Brian Taylor is doing a little of that lately as well as committing himself to a serious conditioning program that will light up the green lights once the Cougars basketball program gets underway. off-seas- No Problem Being A Nice Guy In IJte Basketball Gamp - BOUNTIFUL If the saying of nice guys finish last then the University of Utah basketball team is in trouble this season. The reason for that is the fact that their new head coach, Bountiful resident Lynn Archibald, is one of the nicest people you would want to meet. time assistant at UNLV for the next three season. Coach Archibald then got his first head job at the University of Southern California which he held for one year before taking the head job at Idaho State. He was the Bengals coach from 1976 until 1982 and during that time he had five players drafted into the NBA, including Lawrence Butler who led the nation in scoring one year. AFTER THE stint at ISU Lynn was out of a job until the phone call to Pimm. It wasnt that the offers werent there in fact I had three opportunities to take head jobs at other schools and a couple of other offers to be an assistant elsewhere. The main thing with me at that time though was to stay in the Rocky Mountain TOO MANY times the media and the coaching profession have head on collisions and trouble communicating with each other but this guy puts an end to all of that in a hurry. He is one of the most pleasant people to talk with in any profession. He is a man of conviction and knows what he wants out of life. His family and church are a huge part of his life, and so too is the basketball program at Utah. uWc wanted a place where the kids could really enjoy themselves with friends their own age... The family, which includes3 wife Anne, and children Damon Lynn 10, LeeAnne 8 and Beau 6, is a close knit group that supports one another in all endeavors. LYNN ARCHIBALD was bom in Logan, but he considered the town of Clarkston, Utah his home. His family moved to Torrence, Calif, when Lynn was in the third grade and it was at Torrence High where Lynn starred in football, basketball and track. Ladell Anderson was the first college coach to visit Lynn and he must have hit the spot because Lynn enrolled at Utah the following year and played under Phil the assistant for the Utah Jazz. that coach Johnson, school Lynn IT WAS while a high head the Tarkanian, friend Jerry met his close clinics. THROUGH THOSE many years Lynn has established his own style and philosophy to coaching basketball on the college level and he sees some changes in the Utes next fall. Well pick up and run more to take advantage of our players quickness. The key to any style is your players and thats where a coach has to recruit the type of players he wants for his style. Ive always been associated with one of the leading offensive teams in the nation but my strongest point is defense he admitted. Lynn then went on to explain a little, at UNLV everyone looked at us as just a scoring machine but we couldnt get that many points without the pressure defense that we played. Most people look at defense as the number of points you hold your opponents to and thats it. But you have to take other things into consideration, like the team youre playing and the point difference between you and them. He went on to talk further about how some people think if you hold your opponents to 49 points and you score 51 then you played great defense but he says a team that wins 1 6 might have played better defense. At Las Vegas we played a full court pressure defense, man to man most of the time and I hope to get the Utes to run that style. WHEN ASKED about his goals this year Lynn only has one, to become the best team were capable of becoming. Thats what happened here last year. If we become that type of team the wins and titles will fall into place. He admits he would like this years team to be his but realistically it may take two or three years for him to recruit and get his type of player into the system. That means I look for players with natural talent and'quickness and who are fundamentally sound. Then all they need is experience and we can give them that. The new mentor added that size plays some part in the decision to recruit but he also noted Arkansas was tough several years ago with everyone 64 or smaller, they had the talent and quickness. AS FOR THE instate recruiting Lynn was very honest, we try to get the best player in the state every year, and I think we did that with Sie Moore this year. He then went on to talk about the problems with instate recruiting, not just in Utah but 10-8- ROAD TRIPS made it tough on him, as well as the other players, but Brian stated the professors would do what they could to work w ith traveling athletes. Sometimes late practices or even hard practices made class less enjoyable, but I made it through, he said. The last winter was surrounded with perflex situations in dealings with everyone from coaches to not making the NCAA tournament. Taylor says it was going back to the people who had helped him make right decisions in his early life, that kept things in perspective. TAYLOR became pretty good friends with Durrant through his initial year as a Cougar, but admits that he really got close to all the players. He stated, Theres a little friction on any team at some given time, but the thing I can seriously credit at BYU is the unity among the players. The guys really like each other and they accept ya right off, as well as wanting you to play well. Once you get on that level of basketball, everyone is good and everyone wants to start. THERES A time when youve got to make your own mind up, but mom and dad were always a source of strength and will continue to be, said Brian. anywhere. I think its tougher to recruit in state kids than anyone. You see them every year in your camp and all the time on television but you just dont know about him as far as size and things are concerned. The worst thing you could do is recruit an instate kid and have him sit the bench. Everyone figures the kid averaged 21 points in high school why cant he in college? LYNN ADDED that every small state goes through this problem, the small town kid who plays great and never gets a college offer. One thing you look for in a kid is motivation. In high school these guys were always bigger and stronger than their opponents and they didnt have to play defense the entire game. In college it isnt like that and you have to determine whether this kid can get motivated to play the defense in college. Also, in high school he was used to scoring 20 or more points a game, is he mature enough to realize that in college he may only get nine or ten points but still contribute to the team. These are all things a coach has to look at when recruiting. Coach Archibald is convinced the best program is on the freshman level, the only time you recruit out of junior college is for immediate help at a position. He also noted that Utah has some great junior college programs and if a kid had a Utah connection he would be more apt to recruit them. The new Ute man also had high praise for the prep coaches in the state, these kids get great coaching in high school. Many people feel if a team takes state one year all five starters should get college offers. Sports Quiz Let us shop for your motorcycle, camper, Who won the Kemper Open golf tournament? 2.
