Show APRIL 20, 1983 ' Its A Family Affair Coaches Make Difference LAYTON - For Kris Bird, an avid admirer of the sport of soccer, there is nothing in the world like a competitive afternoon of soccer in which she plays an active role. KRIS, WHO is a student at North Layton Junior High School, has been playing the sport for AYSO teams since she was in the third grade. But the next best thing to playing soccer, at least in Kris book, is coaching it. This spring, because things just fell into place, she is getting her chance to coach. to ask Kris if she knew of anyone that might be interested in taking a team. He kinda asked me if I would coach so I asked my mother. Mom thought it was great but also thought it would be better if I had an older advisor to help out, said Kris. KRIS DIDNT have to go too far to find help. She approached Ron Munns first and it was only fitting that she did since Mr. Munns had three daughters of his own on the team in need of a coach. So far weve played two games, said Kris, And I think weve improved quite a bit. We lost the first game 0 but won the second one Each Saturday this team among all other girls soccer teams gather at Lincoln Elementary for game competition. -- IT JUST happened this spring that there were more young girls in Layton City that wanted to play soccer than there were coaches. That prompted the league president 3-- 2-- ITS ENJOYABLE to w atch the young girls start out, Kris continued as she talked about her nine and ten year players. Even Kris younger sister, Cindy, is on the team she coaches. Ron claims he "never really wanted to be a soccer coach," but knew the girls needed someone and conceeded to help Kris out. Rons three daughters who are on the team include Leslie, Dawn and Joy. OTHER MEMBERS of the team include Tonia Adams, Christal Stott, Stephanie Beck. Addie Stewart, Amy Eschenroder, Lori Connor, Melissa Keyes, W'endy Olsen, Kari Wid-ne- r and Carolee Truman. Womens Track Falcons Finish Strong The Lady Falcons of Clearfield continued their impressive spring showing in track and field by placing second as a team in the fourth State Invitaannual Stevens Brown-Webe- r tional last Friday at the college. :: : Soccer has become a family affair in the Ron Munns family of Layton, Utah. Munns is helping to coach three of his girls and half a dozen others in his first ever soccer coaching experience. Kris Bird (far right) is the assistant coach and was the one who got the whole idea started of coaching the girls.Kris attends North Layton Junior High and has played soccer since the third grade. COACH ROGER Buhrley, in just his first year with the girls, was quite impressed himself with the showing. I figured wed be in the top three or four, but things took place that I didnt expect and we were good enough for second, he said. Hillcrest beat out Clearfield for the top spot by outscoring the Falcons 55 to 38. OTHER LOCAL happenings that were worth mention was Davis Highs success in the d relay where Davis High won with ease. Suzy Orton, w ho helped anchor the relay team also took third in the 100 meters and fifth in the 200 meters. Layton also had some fair finishes but as a team did not fare as well as the neighboring Falcons. 440-yar- ONE OF THE Falcons brighest hopes for the future has to be Stephanie Clements who is just a sophomore. She was certainly a smash last weekend at W'eber. Clements, who won the 400 meters at the Icebreaker, took the 400 meters at Weber State too in a time of 59.02. Surprisingly the second place finisher in that same event was Clements teammate, Laura Zaugg who was right m - Draayer. BEEN Johnson as of late that has picked on that principle the most. The multiup talented and hard working pitcher has earned the respect of the younger pitchers on the Davis staff, and thus hes had opportunity to teach them a few of the things hes picked up in two and a half years at Davis High. David isnt just a thrower, hes a superb pitcher, said Draayer about his no. 1 guy. Lately Dave has had more chances to teach than I have. He understands the curve, the slider and the little slurve, or whatever he calls it, so I went ahead and let him go at the younger kids. last season with a few incidents that took place. Johnson was more or less thrown into the big lake as still a young babe, but surprisingly he came through with flying colors. As he put it, It was just a matter of getting him his mound time. And getting mound time was no trouble at all DRAAYER I GUESS it was fortunate in a way that I go as much time as I did last year, stated Johnson, But i sure didnt have much confidence and consequently wasnt throwing very well. I wasnt expecting to be a starting pitcher as just a junior and it floored me at first. Through most of last year I got the call to pitch against the tougher teams which was good, too, I suppose. I threw to Bountiful twice last year and the last time I faced them I only allowed them two runs. (The Braves were on the states elite teams last season.) CLEARFIELD also took first in the mile relay event with Sharon Anderson, Lisa Garcia, Zaugg and Clements backing up that victory. The mile relay quartet did well enough to set a new meet record of 4:06.53 which broke the old mark set by Provo in 1980. The Falcon's medley relay team also got into the limelight with a fourth place finish. helped to round out the Faby lcons scoring placing third in the fast 200 CLEMENTS meters race. event Layton's only placer in the one-da- y was Melba Tyson in the 0 high hurdles where she placed fourth. 1 1 its Stuff oiMisoi. Zaugg is just a junior. Draayer about it, Dave had a great summer and from there hes been getting better ever since. THE DAVIS senior has concentrated only on baseball this spring, in fact he seldom even golfs. Baseball is sometimes a mental game, it requires a lot of attention and the right kid of situations have to prevail in order to be successful, said Johnson. In order to be a good pitcher, youve got to practice quite a bit and be able to pitch just about anything. I feel good about my curve and slider and mostly feel confident with anything I go with, he said. IN THE RECENT three-hi- shutout of East, t Johnson tossed only 70 pitches. (James) told me to just throw strikes and I did, said Johnson. After Davis 4 victory over Bountiful last Van-derhei- rest of the season. Wed been struggling in our hitting before that game and finally it came through. I sincerely believe with Scott Ongley, Jay Jeppson and a few others that our pitching staff is much stronger this year than last. If we combine a little hitting with that, we'll be right in the thick of the race, said the Davis pitcher. JOHNSON was really happy with the defense the Darts have been playing this spring, giving up only four errors in four games. Against the Braves they had a few more than usual, but Johnson said theyd take em if the win still counted. The biggest thing about Johnson is that he understands himself, said Draayer, He knows physically and mentally what he is capable of doing and what he cant do. The mental picture he has of himself is just where it ought to be. 7-- week, the Darts stood at 3 in league action. According to Johnson he felt that that was a launching pad of what fans could expect for the 2-- HIS MECHANICS are super too and as long as they continue, well continue to stay in the ballpark. AFTER GRADUATION, Johnson went on a vacation for a few weeks and completely put baseball aside. Perhaps that was the best thing he could have done because when he returned to competition in the summer Prep League, Johnson turned a new leaf. Under Pat Benton in the summer league, Johnson had a super summer of pitching. Flint says hell go with Kyle Jensen of Hillcrest in both hurdle races and says Glen Briggs has as a good a chance as anyone to win the pole vault. The list continues on, only making the Huskies that much more of a favorite. But thats not taking anything away from Viewmont, said Flint, I saw the Vikings early in the indoor meets and predicted them as a team to contend with. Viewmont will be tough in state too, and they might even take it, but Hillcrest really scares me. 4-- A Journal Sports : good idea there w ho will win THE VIKINGS had some people that didnt place last weekend at Weber, that should come back to Weber State on May 20 and 21 at the meet and do much better.
