Alder. The highlight of the trip was when their own Rep. Ute Knowlton introduced the students on the floor of the House. AT THE beginning of the 1981-8- 2 school year, a split grade class studying the Constitution, decided they wanted to set up a student government at Burton School. 6 Under the direction of their teacher, Glen Walker, they wrote a draft constitution which was shared with Bowen Lewis, the principal. Mr. Lewis proposed a constitutional convention. Two representatives from each of the fifth and sixth grade classrooms met and wrote the schools constitution. The constitution was then voted on and ratified by the student- - body. THE CONSTITUTION they wrote is based on our National Constitution and provides for an executive, legislative and judicial branch of government. A student advisor is provided for each branch to assist the students. The students make the laws that govern the school as a whole within the guidelines of the constitution. Elections for office are held twice a year for the executive and legislative branches.
