Show FEBRUARY 2, 1983 From the oldest to the youngest, athletics has become a family affair for this Star Valley bunch. By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports WEST POINT Athletics have been as much a part of the Darrel Gardner family as daily blessings on the food. As Darrel himself put it, "1 have no idea where we'd been without athletics. ball state championship to his school his senior year. BYU was the next stop for Mike and it was his senior year with the Cougars, under the direction of Stan Watts, that Gardner helped bring a conference championship to Provo. DARREL AND Beatrice presently reside in West Point where they have lived for several years. All six of their children now have families of their ow n, and all six have at one time or another seen an active part in athletics in one ours. Its just been in recent months that Darrel suffered a broken foot while involved in a motorcycle accident. They say I'll be back to normal by April, and I hope so. That's when chuckled the father. Watts regolf starts, membered Darrel after the accident and sent his best wishes. family. THE MOTHER stated, The kids always had a goal in mind and they tried to pursue it. 1 generally knew where they were and felt confident they weren't out looking for something else. I felt athletics were good for them because they were always trying to better themselves. The oldest of their six children is Linda who later met Nolan Schofield and were married. Linda attended Davis High and was a cheerleader when her little brother, Mike was a sophomore and a star in Dart athletics. Darrel Gardner established the familys athletic tradition when he lettered fie times in one ear in high school. Since then, the large Gardner family has lived and breathed sports. THE SCHOFIELDS have six children, three of which (Cory, Jeff and Hal) have or are presently playing basketball for the Clearfield Falcons. Jeff is currently the center for Ricks College basketball squad. The other three children include Lisa, Matt and Wade. Next in line is Mike who his father said would perform at halftime in Star Valley, Wyoming high school basketball games, putting on dribbling exhibitions that would put the crowd to their feet. Little Mike was but four years old at the time. Darts Playoff Hopes Twinkle By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports KAYSVILLE to see Its energy-creatin- g what a victory can do for a prep basketball squad like the Davis Darts. Anymore charges like the one East saw last Friday night, might have the hopes of landing a berth in the state tournament a reality, THE 0 blow that East took was enough to notch the first win in the victory column for a Davis club that has suffered patiently with smaller and younger players in a league blessed' with tall timber and superb talent. The critical subject around Davis right now, as far as basketball is concerned, is whether the guys in brown and gold can keep up their winning ways and make a solid run for the state toiurnament. Davis hosted Viewmont on Tuesday of this week w hich was a very critical step in their plans to land the berth. MIKE GARDNER, the veteran coach of the Darts, figured at the first of the year that two wins over Viewmont and two over East would get them into the tourney. Four wins would do it for sure." he said. loss to the Vikings But the season-openin- g stubbed their plans and Davis went on to lose three more games. Now the East victory has them optimistic again. The victory in Salt Lake even has them thinking about possible upsets over other people besides East and Viewmont. GOING INTO the East contest, Gardner mapped a game plan designed for his club to get ahead. We knew that East would zone us and considering that they were much, much larger than us, we knew it wouldn't be easy. They started five players 3 or taller and our tallest player starting was Steve Sargent at "They sat in the zone and we couldn't penetrate it. When we finally got ahead by a point, we went into our delay game, wanting them to come out and play defense. When they started o extend their zone defense we were able to get inside and were able to get a three to four point lead. After that they were content to foul us in hopes that we would miss. 54-4- 6-- 6-- 3. 1 2. 6-- game. GARDNER SAID their was no question in his mind why his kids played like they did. Even though he was reluctant to admit it, Gardner said it could have been because his son Brad had gone in for surgery just hours before the game. I think most of the guys on the team know Brad and love him. They played for Brad, they told me so. I got to the gym at seven oclock and they swarmed me, asking how Come and join the Clearfield Freestyle Wrestling Club sponsored by the Clearfield Recreation Department. And for that matter so did Steve Sargent, Casey Lloyd and Brad Nielson. We played five players the entire second half simply because things were going so well for us.
