Show I JANUARY 26, 1983 Final Dual Meets For Thursday Lancers, Falcons Before Wrestling Tournament Victory Could Mean Estep and pounder Wayne By KEITH DUNCAN Journal Sports Dual Title By KEITH DUNCAN KAYSVILLE - This Thursday evening in Bountiful and providing the Davis Dart wrestling club can continue their torrid vinning ways, the Darts can lay claim to the coveted distinction of being the only Region Four team to go through the regular season without a dual meet defeat. The match begins at 7:30 p.m. -- AND THEN one week later, its Region Four Wrestling meet war time again with all of the six teams coming to Davis High to battle it out Feb. 3 for the other coveted title. Davis, by most standards, might appear to be the favorite in the 1983 region meet, but almost anything can happen and nearly anything usually does this time of the year for wrestlers. Injuries and sickness are a couple of hovering factors that will give any of the head coaches ulcers. IN THE DUAL meet against Bountiful on Thursday evening, one of the featured matches will pit the Braves Eddie Snow against Davis Chris Cardinet at 132. That is if Chris comes back from the illness that has haunted him the past week. If he doesnt then Darren Ryujin will take his place which Ryujin did last week and did just fine in pinning Highland's Mark White in the second round. It would be good however if Cardinet could come back, because the Braves have Benson Alder (lost only to Viewmonts Matt McNiel). Either Ryujin or Brent Ator will get a shot at Alder. ANOTHER solid match should be the set-u- p with Davis undefeated Nate Hinckley going against Trent Jones who has lost only one match. Get prepared for one more good match at 185 with Bountifuls Mike Lee (lost only once) meeting Davis undefeated Greg McNabb. Greg, as only a junior, has looked very respectable in dual meets. The Scott Tennis coaching against his former assistant, Bruce Burningham. Burningham took over as the head of the Laker wrestling program just this year after filling the head football coaching position at Moab High the past two years. THE LANCERS have four undeated region wrestlers heading into the Thursday night bout with Roy while the Falcons will expose two undefeated region grapplers of their own. Eric Hyde, Rich Gallegos, Tracy Jones and Blaine Tracy have yet to lose in Region One competition, in fact all of them have looked very respectable thus far. If past history means anything at all, the wrestlers Roy will pit against them on Thursday night probably wont give them too tough a battle, thus allowing these four to get a No. 1 seeding position heading into the region tournament next week. THE MOST interesting confrontations in the dual will probably be at 105 where Roys Darren Day will meet Laytons Rodney Rientjes. Both of these guys have been tough all year and should provide a pretty good show for the Thursday night crowd. Another interesting bout will pit Laytons sophomore Brent Higgs against one of Roys better wrestlers in Kent Win ward. Mike will see about this week getting the cast off his arm sometime and if the doctor okays it, he might get back But the thing that Hansen into the line-uto wants guard against is getting PetrofT back into the line-u- p and seeing him get hurt again. The Lancers will have to make a tough decision if Petroff is capable of coming back, because his replacement, Songpol Niersirs has won two of the three matches he has participated in. Niersirs lost only a slim decision to Rick Herdt of Clearfield, but has beaten both his Weber and Bonneville opponents since that time. I DONT underestimate these kids in title at the South Summit tournament last weekend. The Braves as a team have lost only one dual meet at the hands of Viewmont and they will be hungry to bring down Davis and make it two in a row which includes a win over Davis last season. efforts tuned in to his squad. The Davis wrestlers havent lost a dual meet at home this year. SOME OF THE pleasant plugs in the Dart wrestling program include wrestlers like John Jones. Jones, a senior, has stuck with the sport of wrestling through high and low times. Hes been with Dickson for the past three years now, having seen some action in varsity matches as a sophomore, then as a junior and finally this his senior season. Jones doesn't compete in any other sport besides wrestling, however he did go out for football as a sophomore. He started out as a as a sophomore and has stuck at that weight ever since. John stands a very good chance of winning the region at 145 but has some solid matches in front of him before any roses get pinned on him. ON AN INDIVIDUAL basis, the Darts still have four undefeated wrestlers in region action. Those four include Shawn Robinson at 105, John Jones at 145, Nate Hinckley at 155 and Greg McNabb at 185. Both Jones and McNabb, however, will both receive good tests this week. With the region tournament just around the corner il gets interesting from a coaches standpoint to view who will wrestle and where and who wont. Jim Dickson, the third year head coach for the Darts, claims he is content with what his kids have done so far and says he doesnt plan on doing much changing around. er SO ONCE again, its that time of the year again when wrestling gets into the steady swing of things. And those who follow Davis wrestling cant go too wrong if they pick their club to WEVE BEEN DOING well with the people weve got and unless something comes up that we dont have control over, were going to keep it that way, said Dickson. win some more trophies. The Darts have some solid things going for them right now in that theyve won the Bear River Invitational as a team and have been on a roll in league dual matches. Dickson says everyone still has a chance as far as he is concerned, but things have never looked this good at this point in Dicksons three years as head coach. Dickson says he is happy the meet is at home claiming his wrestlers are a little more comfortable when at home. Dickson will be in charge of the touranment but with the tremendous support that people around Davis give sporting events, he should be able to keep his mind and The Young Ambassadors from BYU undefeated Region Four dual meet squad will try to make it five in a row and a perfect dual meet year when they face Bountiful Thursday evening in Bountiful. region Davis Box Elder Bees Joins Region The newest member of Region One next season will be the Box Elder Bees from Brigham City. Such was made official this month with members of the UHSAA voting to move the Bees into this region. THE MOVE became necessary when Sky View High will plan a split this summer and send a portion of their students to a newly built school to be given the name of Mountain Crest. Sky View and Mountain Crest will become ranks. members of the Box Elder will probably stand as the smallest school in Region One having perhaps just a little over 1100 students.
