Show WEEKLY Monte MarkoSySon of Steven and Amy Markos of Clearfield, relaxes with his sister Melanie during a Saturday morning soccer game. NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 22, 1982 REFLEX-DA- VIS Kids Hear The Keith Duncan Retlex Journal Bulletin We run an open registration in the spring and fill that season up in a hurry, said Barbara, Then when fall starts, we fill in where players have moved or dropped out and basically keep the same leagues and teams through that season. CLEARFIELD Remember the Pied Piper? Remember the tune he played for some kids and how they instinctively followed him? Well folks, he is back. But he is not in the form of a flute player this time, but has turned himself into the ever booming sport of soccer. Kids by the hundreds rise up early and late on Saturdays across the W'asatch Front to listen to the tune of another thrilling soccer game. They come in all sizes, all the little ones and some big kids too. IN CLEARFIELD, youth soccer in that city is coordinated with the American Youth Soccer Association, of which most of Davis County areas are. The other soccer league is the Utah Youth Soccer League. Clearfield is included Region 198 according to Barbara Yard, the assistant Recreation Director in Clearfield. In addition to Clearfield, other cities like Hill Field, Syracuse, West Point and Clinton are included in that region. IN CLEARFIELD, soccer has boomed in the past few vears. A year ago there were only 13 teams and this season theie are 19. The spring season of soccer starts in March and goes to May. Then another season gets underway in September and runs until November. THOMAS SAID it was because of the quality people who volunteer time that the program is expanding. When he arrived in Clearfield two years ago, he remembers there being only six soccer teams for all ages. Today there are 19. - 'v ' Kids begin playing at 5 years of age in Clearfield, run until they are 14. The interest is becoming bigger and along with that comes problems, mainly because of expansion. It has been difficult scheduling practices and games and finding the coaches to oversee the kids. ALL GAMES are played on Saturday, cold weather or not. Hundreds of children and their fans line the soccer fields at Fisher Park to see their kids through the eight week season. Barbara is the area coordinator for the 19 Clearfield teams. She helps to run the registration for A YSO every season and admits that it all tends to keep her busy. BARBARA doesnt miss a Saturday. Rain, storms or sunshine, she said. The kids just have a ball out there and despite the few problems we have in organization, the fun the parents and kids get out of the program' makes up for it.. ROGER THOMAS, the Recreation Director, said he was happy to see so many kids involved in the program. Its a natural sport for kids where they can run and kick and feel part of a team, yet be an individual at the same time. The key to seeing the program go is the volunteer coaches who spend all the time through the week and on Saturdays in practices and in games. They are high calibur people and w ithout them we couldnt make the league go, said Thomas.
