Don't you remember last season when the Vikings went up to Face Kaysville and ost it if it wasn't for the fact that Coach Ward Saw ley is a kind man the score could hav e been in the hundreds. Right off the top of my head I can think of seven starters on the Viewmont team that didn't play in that game. Mark Law, Doug Lee and Kurt Mathews all played in the sophomore game while Troy Larsen and Steve Caputo were resting for the varsity game. Then Anthony Skedros. Kevin Smith and Roger Davis all never played football a year ago. And finally Brian Spencer was playing for Cedar High last year. Fm not sure you can count that JV score either. As juniors NORTH DAVIS LEADER, SEPTEMBER should be proud of, but the bottom line is that all those wouldn't have any wins this season. Up until this year these seniors at View mom had only won one game but again that means nothing. They've proven that with two wins already this year. Me: But does Viewmont know how to stop the double wing this year? It was almost embarrassing to watch them try to stop it last year. SELF: honestly think they know how. Mark Pierce is there now and although he didn't beat the Darts he showed signs of defensing that offense. In two years at Bear River. Mark lost and to the Darts. "1 have better athletes here at Viewmont" he has said so maybe this year he can get them. If nothing else he's shown he's never been blitzed by them. Me: What about this year then? Senior Rod- ger Davis has played well and junior Doug Lee has proven he can move the club. Both are relatively new to their other players so I guess you would have to give Davis the nod here. Me: Defensively the Darts look to Mark Staples, Jim Hill, Steve Flauken, Craig Wagstaff and a bunch from the offensive side to shut down the Vikes. And remember, both the varsi Me: The ace in the hole though, is that the Darts have a quick, speeding little back in ty and junior varsity clubs shut out Viewmont last year. Mecham is a tremendous linebacker, Werhli and DeGraw are tough in the secondary. SELF: With the exception of West the Viking defense has looked pretty tough also. Ted Jones, Mark Smedley, Brett Roberts and Tad Lindsay have been strong against the pass with Aaron Buttars, Martin Tellaroli, Doug Bangeter, Kurt Barnett, Roberts, Boothe and Larsen up front to watch the rush. Me: Really, when you think about the likes of Mecham and Werhli running as well as the Darts have a triple threat. that Viewmont will win the game? Sports Quiz Who won the World Series of Golf? 2. SELF: Viewmont will counter w ith Craig Roberts, Jerry Miller, Brian Spencer, Brent Horne and Greg Boothe. They've had three coaches in three years so Davis would hav e to rate an edge in the line. SELF: Get serious, the By KEITH DUNCAN Coach Mike Gardner prefers to call Kirk Storey "one of those special athletes you get once in a while. WARD SAWLEY, the head football coach, says of Storey, Storey is a leader among leaders and is typical of the kids that play on this year's football team. Pretty nice words for a Kaysville kid, one might say. But those kind of comments go with Storey like mortar goes with bricks. They stick and describe him to a tee. 64, 190 lbs., STOREY, AT ared head to boot, never wears a shoe that fits. "They alway s look too big. said Sawley We love him around here, Sawley said, "He is typical of all the kids on this team. They are all good students, work extremely hard, dedicated and are willing to sacrifice. GARDNER, WHO coaches Storey in both football and basketball said the single most important thing about Storey is that he always gives "He is a very skilled football player and in basketball is a great big football player playing basketball," said the Davis coach. STOREYS TEAMMATES must have a special liking for the big red head too. They nominated him as their captain for the '81 football year. Mark Staples, a good friend of Kirks commented, W'e all like his sense of humor. "THE BEST thing can remember about Kirk is four years ago as a freshman. We had gone through the year undefeated and Storey came up with the idea that we ought to set a goal to go undefeated right through our senior year. "W'e all agreed and haven't lost a game as freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. We just like to help each other and at times we have the feeling that we dont know how to lose, sait Staples. 1 KIRK PLAYS 012 position on offense, known commonly as the left guard spot. There aren't too many around w ith his kind of quickness and can get off the ball as fast as he can. "Three steps and he is there, said Sawley. Perhaps the "broomstick drill, something his brother Dean came up with, has been helpful in making him the best trap blocker on this club. DEAN HAS probably helped me more in athletics than anyone. I always look to him when I've got some serious questions, said Kirk. Dean played on the state championship team of 1977. The same pants he wore in the state championship game are the ones worn by Kirk today. "I'm a little bigger so they are tighter on me, said Storey. Two of Storey's cousins wore the pants the a bit school years between the two brothers. "KIRK CAN get upset with himself when he knows he hasn't played w ell. He is a very intense and when he gets out on the football field, it is all business with him. said Sawley. "I like to strive for the per- fect game, Darts throw the ball. Besides Viewmont has some jets in Mathews, Jeff Porter and Doug Scovil. Me: What about the quarterback spot? Ben Horne has guided these guys all through the years. He can throw well, plus run. He could run the double wing offense in his sleep. Sawley describes Storey as smart" and able to read the defense with a keen eye." This year's squad is a little different than last years." said Storey. "We don't get down on each other as much. We are a team not just a bunch of kids out to play football." HE KNOWS the difference after seeing plenty of action last season and some as a sophomore. 1 like to w in and I hate to lose. Fm a good sport though, but I'd rather keep winning and not have to worry about it, said Storey. Gardner best expressed his feelings about Storey by saying, "If my son wants to be an athlete I would like his attitude to be something like Kirk has.
