Show I WEEKLY REFLEX DAVIS NEWS JOURNAL, NORTH DAVIS LEADER, APRIL 1, By KEITH DUNCAN 1 981 WHEN YOU set aside athletics, the schedule doesn't get any lighter for the Davis speedster. After getting some expenence by serving Kays-vtll- e Jr. as their studentbody president. DeGraw is planning to run for the Davis High studentbody spot. He is also involved in choir and drama. Both the seniors and the sophomores at Davis are aware of DeGraw and the potential he has in 1981. Does he like the pressure? There is some pressure, he says. "You can't afford to slack off in practice because everyone is keeping their eye on you. At the meets, you must perform to the best of your ability. Wouldnt you know it. Coach John Flint is even recruiting the local pastors to pray the snow already fallen w ill melt and the skies w ill hold their fill until some time late Saturday night. THE Clearfield mentor, whose school will host the 1981 Davis District Track and Field Championships this Friday and Saturday, is still thinking positive that a meet will be staged despite the white stuff falling Monday Clear skies did appear on Tuesday however. The featured track event gets underway at 11 a m. on Friday and will last until 3:30 p.m. that evening. The remaining finals and most of the excitement w ill occur this Saturday starting again at 11 a.m. and lasting until 4:30 p.m. . COACH FLINT of Clearfield says the 100 meter is "going to be a dandy." He expects DeGraw to finish at or near the top in this event as well as the 200 meter. Flint then proceeded to point out where most of the strengths lie as a preview to this weekend. ONE OF THE featured pa- rticipants has to be Davis junior, Spencer DeGraw. He will be an odds on favorite to capture the meet's most exciting event, the 100 meter run. He is probably a fav onte in the 200 meter also. As a sophomore last season, Spence won the acclaim of many by finishing second to Murrays Brian Hayzelgeren in the firecracker 100 meter race, style. THE J ELIN has at least six people who are no more than six inches apart. This could be one of the keener competitions. I suppose I could pick Bountiful to win the pole v ault, the rest of us are pretty weak this year. THIS YEAR is sort of a said DeGraw. With our school going next year, I won't be competschools in ing against championship meets. I would like to bow out w ith some good performances. DeGraw also appears excited about w hat the future will bnngtoo. My senior year will be quite a battle it looks like. Keith Crockett of Roy and Brian Wright of Clearfield will make it tough to win, he said. BESIDES STARRING in the sprinting events in spring, young Spence also plays football in the fall. Last fall when Brent Hatch got hurt in the offensive DeGraw was one who performed in his stead. Besides running the ball, he can also defend against it. When Davis star defensive halfback, Lynn Lloyd was injured, DeGraw also filled that THE HIGH hurdles w ill be dominated by juniors this year. Layton. Davis, Viewmont and our school should produce the top finishers. I'd have to give our school the edge in the 400 meter run. however Viewmont could be a threat with the Nitzell kid. THE 3200 and 1600 meter races will have either a Davis, Bountiful or Viewmont participant at the top. All three schools are strong in distance events. The discus is hard to call at this point. I feel Mark Carter, our main entree, could be tough but he only beat the Woods Cross guy by an inch. back-fiel- THE 300 hurdles will be similar to the highs. "I'll be very disappointed if we don't win the shot put. Carter clearly has the edge. would also have to favor James Suitt of Layton, he could surprise Carter if anyone does. 1 GEARING UP FOR Shawn Moore, Clearfields mean monster weekends Davis District Track and Field Meet to be held at Clearfield High. DAVIS MEET DAVIS AND ourselves could be battling in the end for the long jump title. (Freddie) Cook is going to do his thing for us. Davis has a kid who could win the high jump but Layton has a good one too. Viewmont and our school are also tough. THE ENTIRE meet will probably come dow n to the relays. Layton, Viewmont and Davis probably have the edge in the 400 meter relay, while Davis should win the medley and our school having the inside crack at the mile relay.
